Gideon Force was a small British and African special force, a Corps d’Élite with the Sudan Defence Force, Ethiopian regular forces and Arbegnoch. Gideon Force fought the Italian occupation in Ethiopia, during the East African Campaign of the Second World War. The leader and creator of the force was Major Orde Wingate. Washera College is a tertiary level education institution operating in the city of Debre Markos, Ethiopia. It opened in 2003, and was the first college in the city. Washera College offers certificates and diplomas in the regular and extension programs in the fields of Law, Information Technology, Accounting and Secretarial Science. The college had also been offering training for elementary school teachers until the Ministry of Education banned teaching programs in private institutions across the country in 2007. It is reported that more than 5,000 students have graduated. The college conducts teaching/learning processes in its own premises located in the Abima suburb of Debre Marqos. In 2010, the college plans to expand its programs in different fields at bachelor's degree level paving its way to gain university standing. It also aims to offer distance education in various fields. For these expansion projects, Washera College has received an additional land from the municipality of Debre Markos.

Belay Zeleke was an Ethiopian military commander who led the Arbegnoch resistance movement in Gojjam against the Fascist Italians during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941. He emerged as a brigand leader after his five-year struggle against Italian rule in Ethiopia.

Debre Elias is a woreda in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Part of the Misraq Gojjam Zone, Debre Elias is bordered on the south and west by the Abay River which separates it from the Oromia Region, on the northwest by the Mirab Gojjam Zone, on the north by Machakel, and on the east by Guzamn. Towns in this woreda include Elias. Debre Elias was part of Machakel woreda.
