G-funk,short for gangsta funk,is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the early 1990s. The genre is heavily influenced by the synthesizer-heavy 1970s funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic,often incorporated through samples or re-recordings. It is represented by commercially successful albums such as Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992) and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (1993).
JhenéAiko Efuru Chilombo is an American R&B singer-songwriter and rapper from Los Angeles,California. Aiko embarked on her musical career in 2002,as a backing vocalist and music video performer for the R&B group B2K. She was signed by their record label,The Ultimate Group that same year and was marketed as the "cousin" of B2K member Lil' Fizz to cultivate her own following,although they are not related. Her debut album,slated for a 2003 release through the label with Epic Records,was shelved due to Aiko instead further pursuing her education.

Recorded as a freestyle in Hawaii,the album was inspired by the island's natural landscape and features traditional singing bowls to create a tranquil effect. In order to create her desired sound,Aiko served as the album's executive producer,enlisting the help of long time collaborators Fisticuffs and Lejkeys,who produced eighteen of the album's songs. The album featured a range of guests including rappers Nas,Ab-Soul,Big Sean and Future,as well as R&B singers Ty Dolla $ign,John Legend,Miguel,and H.E.R.
