Denis Dercourt (born 1 October 1964) is a French film director and screenwriter.

Biography

Denis Dercourt's grandfather directed documentaries, his father was a film producer and his brother is also a film producer. [1] From 1988 to 1993, Dercourt studied philosophy at the Paris Nanterre University and also studied at Sciences Po. [2]

Dercourt started his career as a singer and violin player. He performed with the French symphonic orchestra directed by Laurent Petitgirard and taught music at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. He shot his first short film with his brother. [1] [2]

He has directed nine films since 1997. His film The Page Turner (La Tourneuse de pages) was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. [3] The $4.2 million (€3.07 million) film went on to become an international box office success [4] [5] [6] , grossing $11.1 million worldwide. [7]

Three years later, his film Demain dès l'aube competed in the same section at the 2009 festival. [8]

In 2021, he shot the French-Korean film Vanishing based on the novel The Killing Room by Peter May. [9] [10]

Salut Casa! is a 1952 pseudo-documentary propaganda short film about Casablanca under the French Protectorate. Directed by Jean Vidal, it was screened at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. The film presents Casablanca to French audiences as a miracle of the French mission civilatrice, a modern city in North Africa with high-rise buildings and wide avenues, a bustling economy and rapid development and masterful French planning and administration. The French urbanist Michel Écochard, the director of the Service de l'Urbanisme, Casablanca's urban planning office at the time, featured prominently in the film and discussed how challenges such as internal migration and rapid urbanization were being handled in Casablanca.

Father & Soldier is a 2022 French-Senegalese war-drama film directed and co-written by Mathieu Vadepied, starring Omar Sy, Alassane Diong, and Jonas Bloquet. It was produced by Omar Sy and Bruno Nahon. The film opened the Un Certain Regard section in competition at the 75th Cannes Film Festival on 18 May 2022, and was released in theaters in France by Gaumont on 4 January 2023, and in Senegal by Pathé BC Afrique on 6 January 2023.
