Denise C. Nuttall Stephens is an associate professor of astronomy in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University. [2]
Stephens graduated from Brigham Young University in 1996 as an undergraduate student with a degree in physics. She received her Master's and Ph.D. in Astronomy from New Mexico State University. She completed her a postgraduate program at the Space Telescope Science Institute and at Johns Hopkins University. She joined the faculty of BYU in 2007. [3] She studies the atmosphere of brown dwarfs,looks for and classifies binary systems,studies TNOs,and uses telescopes both on ground and in space to collect infrared data. [2]
In 2017,she and a team of undergraduates at BYU published their discovery of a new planet called KELT-16b,which was made as part of the KELT project. [4] Her team also co-discovered the hottest known exoplanet KELT-9b the same year. [5]
Stephens is a coordinator of the BYU Astronomical Society. [6] She also runs an annual public event called Astrofest which introduces physics and astronomy to kids in a fun way. [7] She is the team captain of an on-campus flag football team which is the only women's intramural faculty team at BYU. [1]

They observe astronomical objects such as stars,planets,moons,comets and galaxies –in either observational or theoretical astronomy. Examples of topics or fields astronomers study include planetary science,solar astronomy,the origin or evolution of stars,or the formation of galaxies. Leuschner Observatory,originally called the Students' Observatory,is an observatory jointly operated by the University of California,Berkeley and San Francisco State University. Dr. Sally Oey is an American astronomer at the University of Michigan and an expert in massive,hot stars which are often precursors to supernovae. In 1999,she was awarded the Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy by the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and,in 2006,was invited to give an address to the 206th meeting of the AAS. Oey is currently a professor and is a member of the board of the Gemini Observatory. In 2023,the University of Michigan named her an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in recognition of her contributions to undergraduate education.
Sara Seager is a Canadian–American astronomer and planetary scientist. She is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is known for her work on extrasolar planets and their atmospheres. She is the author of two textbooks on these topics,and has been recognized for her research by Popular Science,Discover Magazine,Nature,and TIME Magazine. Seager was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013 citing her theoretical work on detecting chemical signatures on exoplanet atmospheres and developing low-cost space observatories to observe planetary transits.
Heidi B. Hammel is a planetary astronomer who has extensively studied Neptune and Uranus. She was part of the team imaging Neptune from Voyager 2 in 1989. She led the team using the Hubble Space Telescope to view Shoemaker-Levy 9's impact with Jupiter in 1994. She has used the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Telescope to study Uranus and Neptune,discovering new information about dark spots,planetary storms and Uranus' rings. In 2002,she was selected as an interdisciplinary scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope.
West Mountain Observatory (WMO) is an astronomical observatory located on West Mountain near the community of West Mountain,Utah United States,about 22 km (14 mi) southwest of Provo. The observatory is owned and operated by Brigham Young University (BYU),and opened in 1981 after increasing light pollution reduced the utility of the Orson Pratt Observatory on the BYU campus. The first year of observing with the new 0.9 m telescope included imaging of intrinsic variable stars and high-mass X-ray binaries. Past research topics include light curve analysis of Delta Scuti variable stars and identifying pre-main-sequence stars by searching for H-alpha emitting objects.
