Dennis Kim (born 1975) is a Canadian violinist born in Seoul, South Korea. He currently serves as the Concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony in Orange County.

Early life

Raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Kim first studied violin with Victor Danchenko at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He later studied with Jaime Laredo, Aaron Rosand and Yumi Ninomiya Scott at the Curtis Institute of Music, and at the Yale School of Music with Peter Oundjian. He also studied with Paul Kantor at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Summer festival studies included Meadowmount School for Strings, ENCORE School for Strings, Pacific Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival and School and has 2 children, Ariana and Heather.

Kim made his solo debut with the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 14, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor. [1]

Career

In 1998, Kim was hired as concertmaster for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, in Tucson, Arizona, but did not assume the position due to a "combination of immigration problems and better offers." [2] Instead, Kim joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as 3rd Associate Concertmaster. Two years later he became the orchestra's concertmaster. In 2005, he was fired from the Hong Kong Philharmonic for auditioning for an American orchestra while on sick leave. [3] After his departure, he served as concertmaster of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. [4] He was concertmaster for the Tampere Philharmonic from 2010 to 2015. Prior to joining the Pacific Symphony, he was most recently Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kim has performed as a soloist with major orchestras in China, Korea, and Japan. On one occasion, Kim replaced an ill William Preucil on 10 hours notice, performing the Vivaldi Four Seasons 20 times in one week, and touring with the Busan Philharmonic on their Japan Tour in 2008.[ citation needed ]

As guest concertmaster, Kim has led the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, [5] Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Montpelier Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Western Australia Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Navarra, Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, and the Avanti Chamber Orchestra.

Kim has been a guest artist at the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Caramoor Music Festival, Bari Music Festival, [6] Bowdoin International Music Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, Suolahti Music Festival, and the Liminka Music Festival. [7] Kim has worked with conductors Riccardo Chailly, and André Previn, among others. As a chamber musician, Kim has performed with musicians including Pinchas Zukerman, Jaime Laredo, Carter Brey, John Sharp, Marya Martin, and members of the Orion, Tokyo, and Guarneri string quartets. In Hong Kong, Kim was a founding member of Opus 3, a piano trio with Warren Lee and Richard Bamping. [8] In Tampere, he performs often in the Tampere Philharmonic's chamber music series, and performs an annual concert master's recital. [9] Kim regularly performs new music, especially through the Atlantic Music Festival. He performed the Hong Kong, [10] Korean, Chinese, [10] and Finnish [11] premieres of Søren Nils Eichberg’s "Qilaatersorneq" for violin solo and orchestra. He has also performed Philip Glass' first violin concerto, [12] Eli Marshall's "Music for a Film in a Romantic Style," [13] and in November 2013 premiered Sheridan Seyfried's violin concerto, commissioned by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. Kim has also performed several other works written for him, including Noam Faingold's "Knife in the Water" for violin and cello. [9]

As a teacher, Kim has been on the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Korean National University of the Arts, Yonsei University, the Tampere Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Kim is one of 5 artists invited for the inaugural Valade Concertmaster program at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He is currently serving on the faculty of the University of California, Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the Orange County School of the Arts. [14]

Kim plays the 1701 ex-Dushkin Stradivarius, on permanent loan from a donor. [15]

He appeared frequently as soloist in violin concertos with these orchestras. Staryk also had an extensive and awarded teaching career.

Ilya Kaler is a Russian-born violinist. Born and educated in Moscow, Kaler is the only person to have won Gold Medals at all three of the International Tchaikovsky Competition ; the Sibelius ; and the Paganini.

Leonidas Kavakos is a Greek violinist and conductor. He has won several international violin competition prizes, including the Sibelius, Paganini, Naumburg, and Indianapolis competitions. He is an Onassis Foundation scholar. He has also recorded for record labels such as Sony/BMG and BIS. As a conductor, he was an artistic director of the Camerata Salzburg and has been a guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Lynnette Seah Mei Tsing is a Singaporean violinist, serving as co-leader of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO). She received the Cultural Medallion for Music in 2006.

Paul Kantor is an American violin teacher. Kantor is a professor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He continues the pedagogical lineage of Dorothy DeLay. He is often selected to participate as a jury member for international violin competitions.

Armen Anassian holds master's degrees in Instrumental Conducting and Violin Performance, and studied in the United States, Armenia, and Germany. His teachers include Rainer Kussmaul, Sidney Weiss, Dorothy DeLay, and conductor Michael Zearott. Mr. Anassian has held Conducting and/or Concertmaster positions with such noted groups as the Hoboken Chamber Orchestra, Freiburg Chamber Orchestra, Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra and the Zelt Musik Festival Orchestra. Erich Gruenberg was an Austrian-born British violinist and teacher. Following studies in Israel, he was a principal violinist of major orchestras, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was an international soloist, playing the first performance of Britten's Violin Concerto in Moscow. As a chamber musician, he was leader of the London String Quartet and recorded all Beethoven violin sonatas with pianist David Wilde. He was the lead violinist for The Beatles' album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Gruenberg taught at the Royal Academy of Music until age 95, influencing generations of violinists.

Oscar Ravina, born in Warsaw, Poland, was a violinist, violin teacher and concertmaster based in New York, who has had a prolific career as a performer as well as being a current professor emeritus at Montclair State University, where a talent grant in his name is regularly given to outstanding full-time freshmen studying string instruments.

William (Bill) Barbini is an American violinist. He took his diploma from Juilliard School in 1970, studying with Ivan Galamian among others. He thereafter became one of the youngest members selected to the New York Philharmonic violin section. During his tenure with the NY Philharmonic, Barbini also performed as principal violinist with the Gramercy String Quartet. With Barbini as principal, the Gramercy was commissioned by Pierre Boulez for a number of pre-concert performances at Avery Fisher Hall. While in New York, Barbini also served as concertmaster for the Joffrey Ballet and soloist with the Festival Orchestra at the Norwalk Performing Arts Festival.

John Harding Hon DMus is an internationally renowned violinist. He has travelled the world as a soloist, teacher, concertmaster, chamber musician, conductor and recording artist.

Nancy Zhou is a Chinese-American classical violinist. She has performed as a soloist in recital and with orchestras throughout the world. Zhou has been a prizewinner in several major competitions, including first prizes in the 2018 Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition and the 2018 International Music Competition Harbin.

He is a prize winner of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition and Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition and first-prize winner of the 2013 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Montreal Symphony Manulife Competition, and Klein International Strings Competition.

Andrew Ling (凌顯祐) is a Hong Kong violist. As of 2015, he is the principal violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has performed solo performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic to critical acclaim. In the past, he had assumed the role of concertmaster at the Indiana University (IU) Concert Orchestra and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra.

Blake Pouliot is a Juno-nominated Canadian professional classical violinist. Pouliot is currently Soloist-in-Residence at the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal.
