Dennis Tyler (born December 4,1942) is a convicted felon and former American politician who served as the mayor of Muncie,Indiana. On November 18,2019,he was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and charged with theft of government funds. [1] He was sentenced on November 10,2021 to one year and one day,his mayoral term having expired on January 1,2020. He was released from prison in April 2022. [2]
Tyler grew up on the south side of Muncie and is a graduate of Muncie Central High School. He served as a Line Captain for the Muncie Fire Department before retiring after 42 years of service. On January 4,2006,he was sworn into office as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives,elected as the Democratic Party candidate. He represented District 34 for six years. Tyler served on committees that focused on veteran's affairs,public safety,employment labor,pensions,roads,transportation,autism,and government reform.
During his tenure in the House,Tyler was an advocate for victims of violent crimes,introducing legislation that in the absence of a will,no share of a deceased person's estate should go to a parent convicted of killing the other parent. Tyler resigned from the Legislature in December 2011 to assume the duties of Mayor,effective January 1,2012.
Tyler and his administration re-opened two fire stations,consolidated animal control,re-initiated summer programming in the parks,graded more than 30 lane miles of roads and 70 alleys,presented more than 50 proclamations,received almost $8 million in grants,and announced nearly 100 new jobs and over $3.2 million in new payroll,representing over $30 million in new capital investment.
Tyler has been active in many community organizations,including United Way,the Knights of Pythias,and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He has been the Chairman of the Labor and Industry Board of the NAACP since 2010.
Tyler did not run for re-election in 2019,and at year-end was succeeded by Republican Dan Ridenour,a member of the Muncie City Council and financial officer. [3] [4]
On November 18,2019,Tyler was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at his home,based upon corruption allegations. The federal probe revealed bid-rigging,mail and wire fraud,fraudulent bids,money laundering,and other organized crime schemes that drained the city of funds. Six others were previously arrested as part of the probe into Tyler's administration,including his appointed building commissioner,Craig Nichols. [5] Prior to his arrest,Tyler and his administration had been under investigation by the FBI and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana since 2016. [6] Tyler is expected to stand trial on August 10,2020. [7] He was represented by famed Indiana attorney James H. Voyles Jr. [8]
Tyler and federal prosecutors struck a deal in May 2021 to plead guilty to one count of theft of government funds. He was condemned to one year and one day in jail in November 2021. [9] He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and forced to pay $15,250 in restitution. [10] In April,2022 he was released from federal prison after serving more than five months. [11]

Frank William Abagnale Jr. is an American security consultant,author,and convicted felon who committed frauds that mainly targeted individuals and small businesses. He later gained notoriety in the late 1970s by claiming a diverse range of workplace frauds,many of which have since been placed in doubt. In 1980,Abagnale co-wrote his autobiography,Catch Me If You Can,which built a narrative around these claimed frauds. The book inspired the film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg in 2002,in which Abagnale was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. He has also written four other books. Abagnale runs Abagnale and Associates,a consulting firm.

Corruption in Illinois has been a problem from the earliest history of the state. Electoral fraud in Illinois pre-dates the territory's admission to the Union in 1818. Illinois had the third most federal criminal convictions for public corruption between 1976 and 2012,behind New York and California. A study published by the University of Illinois Chicago in 2022 ranked Illinois as the second most corrupt state in the nation,with 4 out of the last 11 governors serving time in prison.

Richard Wershe Jr.,known as "White Boy Rick",is an American former drug trafficker and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant. The youngest known informant in the history of the FBI,Wershe became a confidential informant when he was 14 to 16 years old. When he was 15,Wershe told the FBI that a major drug dealer had spoken of paying a bribe to Detroit detective inspector and subsequent city council president and mayoral candidate Gil Hill in order to quash the investigation into a 13-year-old boy's murder. At the age of 17,Wershe was arrested for possession of 8 kg of cocaine and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2017,justice campaigners publicized Wershe's case and he was subsequently paroled,but directly to a prison in Florida to serve another five years for an auto theft conviction from 2008. Campaigners for Wershe have suggested to reporters that the length of his incarceration may have been connected to him having provided the FBI with information leading to the arrest of family members and associates of former Detroit mayor Coleman A. Young,as well as the allegation about Young's political ally Hill. In 2016,a notorious former Detroit hitman alleged Hill had once tried to commission the murder of Wershe.
The 2022 Indiana Senate election took place on Tuesday November 8,2022 with elections in the U.S. state of Indiana,coinciding with other elections in the state,U.S. House,and Indiana House,as well as various other state and local elections. Voters will elect members to 25 of the 50 seats in the Indiana Senate to serve four-year terms in single-member constituencies. The primary election took place on Tuesday May 3,2022. The Republican Party has held a majority since 2011.
