Dependent and Happy is the third studio album by Ricardo Villalobos. It was released by Perlon on LP and CD over three dates in August and September, 2012. The album is Villalobos' first solo studio album since 2004's Thé au Harem d'Archimède ; several previous albums have either been DJ mixes (2007's fabric36 ), compilations (2006's Salvador and 2008's Vasco ) or collaborations (2011's Re:ECM , with Max Loderbauer.)

Ricardo Villalobos German-Chilean musician and DJ

Ricardo Villalobos is a Chilean-born German electronic music producer and DJ. He is well known for his work in the minimal techno and microhouse genres, and is one of the most significant figures in today's minimal techno scene.

Perlon is an electronic music record label founded in Frankfurt, Germany, based in Berlin, and run by Thomas Franzmann aka Zip and Markus Nikolai. It is a minimal techno and microhouse label whose sound features vocals and peppery sounds. Producers such as A Guy Called Gerald, Ricardo Villalobos, Baby Ford, Thomas Melchior, Stefan Goldmann, Luciano, Matt John, Dandy Jack, Akufen and Pantytec have released records on Perlon. It is a vinyl only label, apart from a few compilations and mixes released on CD. No released have been made available online in any digital format.

LP record longplay record

The LP is an analog sound storage medium, a vinyl record format characterized by a speed of 33 13 rpm, a 12- or 10-inch diameter, and use of the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. Apart from a few relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound, it has remained the standard format for vinyl albums.

Contents

Dependent and Happy was originally issued as five LP set, released in three parts: part one contained sides A-D; part two, sides E-H; and part three, sides I and J, a single vinyl release. Parts one and two were released on August 29, 2012, while part three followed on September 5. The CD pressing was released two weeks later, on September 19. The CD omits three songs and combines the remaining eleven songs into a DJ mix by Villalobos himself. Neither pressing will be issued digitally. [1]

In October 2012, Villalobos released a fourth part of the album on vinyl, containing two additional songs and upping the album to a six LP set. [2] Originally limited to 300 copies available only at Perlon pop-up stores, this fourth part has been repressed for wide release as of February 23, 2013. Both tracks are listed as sides K and L below.

"Koito" heavily samples "(Holon) Slo Motion" by Atom Heart, while "Two Kids Set Off" notably includes interviews and phonecalls related to the Columbine High School massacre.

Columbine High School massacre school shooting at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, United States on 20 April 1999

The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, United States. The perpetrators, twelfth grade (senior) students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and one teacher. Ten students were killed in the library, where the pair subsequently committed suicide. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting at a high school in United States history. The crime has inspired several copycats, and "Columbine" has become a byword for a school shooting.

Record producer individual who oversees and manages the recording of an artists music

A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performer's music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many, varying roles during the recording process. They may gather musical ideas for the project, collaborate with the artists to select cover tunes or original songs by the artist/group, work with artists and help them to improve their songs, lyrics or arrangements.

Audio mastering form of audio post-production

Mastering, a form of audio post production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the source from which all copies will be produced. In recent years digital masters have become usual, although analog masters, such as audio tapes, are still being used by the manufacturing industry, notably by a few engineers who have chosen to specialize in analog mastering.

A double album is an audio album which spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold, typically records and compact disc. A double album is usually, though not always, released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium. Recording artists often think of double albums as comprising a single piece artistically; however, there are exceptions such as John Lennon's Some Time in New York City and Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Another example of this approach is Works Volume 1 by Emerson Lake and Palmer, where side one featured Keith Emerson, side two Greg Lake, side three Carl Palmer, and side four was by the entire group.
