Dera Baba Nanak is a sub-district (Tehsil or block) in Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. [1] Its headquarters is in Dera Baba Nanak city. It is situated in the western part of the district, along the Indo-Pakistani border. It was created in 1995. The Kartarpur corridor is situated there, that connects Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib on the other side of the international border.

History

During the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, some military action was seen in the area around Kasowal, near Dera Baba Nanak city. This battle was won by Indian army. In this battle, 32 soldiers were killed and 3 wounded on the Indian side. On the Pakistani side, 34 soldiers were killed, 1 wounded and 26 were missing or captured. [2]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Dera Baba Nanak sub-district has a total population of 1,24,295. Of these, 65,662 were males and 58,633 were females. The population of children below the age of 6 was 15,064, of which 8,338 were males and 6,716 were females. The population of Scheduled castes was 16,761, of which 8,775 were males and 7,986 were females. The number of persons who were literate were 80,449, of which 45,133 were males and 35,316 were females. [3]

Gillanwali is a village in Batala in Gurdaspur district of Punjab State, India. It is located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from sub district headquarter, 26 kilometres (16 mi) from district headquarter and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Sri Hargobindpur. The village is administrated by Sarpanch an elected representative of the village. There is another village with the same name in the district, that is situated in the Dera Baba Nanak Tehsil, near a town called Dhianpur.

Shahpur Jajan is a town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab State, India. It is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from sub district headquarter Dera Baba Nanak and 46 kilometres (29 mi) from district headquarter Gurdaspur. The town is administrated by Sarpanch, an elected representative of the town. Shahpur Jajan is divided into four wards, each electing a sarpanch. These wards are Rampur, Shampur, Main Shahpur Jajan and Kila. Shahpur Jajan is also known as Shahpur Purbiyan. Gurdwara Sri Kothri Sahib is its main philosophical site here.

The Kartarpur Corridor is a visa-free border crossing and religious corridor, connecting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, near Lahore in Pakistan to Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur district, Punjab, India. The crossing allows devotees from India to visit the gurdwara in Kartarpur, Pakistan, 4.7 kilometres from the India–Pakistan border on the Pakistani side without a visa. However, Pakistani Sikhs are unable to use the border crossing, and cannot access Dera Baba Nanak on the Indian side without first obtaining an Indian visa or unless they work there.

National Highway 354B, commonly referred to as NH 354B, is a national highway in India. It is a spur road of National Highway 54 in the state of Punjab in India.

Hansali Sahib village is located in the tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib in Fatehgarh Sahib district in the state of the Punjab, India. It is situated 11.5 km (7.1 mi) away from Fatehgarh Sahib, which is both district and sub-district headquarters for Hansali village. Governance of the village is by gram panchayat. The total geographical area of Hansali is 278 hectares. Fatehgarh Sahib is also the nearest town to Hansali.
