Derek S. Green is an American politician and Democratic member of the Philadelphia City Council since 2016. [1]
He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 2023 Philadelphia mayoral election.
Green graduated from the University of Virginia and received his JD from Temple University School of Law. [2] He worked as an assistant district attorney and assistant deputy attorney general for the State of Delaware,and then served as a deputy city solicitor for the City of Philadelphia in the housing and community development division. [1]
Green worked for several years as a legislative aide and special counsel for former councilmember Marian Tasco and an attorney for the council committees on finance and public health and human services. He has also worked on several local and state campaigns. [2]
Green initially ran for the Philadelphia City Council in 2007 but lost. In 2008,he was described as one of the "10 under 40" rising political stars in the city by The Philadelphia Inquirer . [3] [4] He was expected to run for the 8th district seat upon the retirement of Donna Reed Miller in 2011,but he decided to remain as special council to Tasco. [5]
In 2015,he was elected to the city council after winning one of the five Democratic nominations for at-large seats. [6] He received the most votes out of the 16 candidates seeking the primary nominations. [7] He successfully ran for reelection in 2019 and was one of the top fundraisers in the race. [8]
In late 2022,Green announced his bid for Philadelphia mayor. He dropped out of the race in April 2023.
After suspending his mayoral campaign,it was announced that Green would be entering the private sector,joining Bellevue Strategies.
Green lives in Mount Airy with his wife and son,who has autism. [2] He raises money for Autism Speaks and founded the first autism support class at Houston Elementary School with his wife. [9]
Francis Lazarro Rizzo was an American police officer and politician. He served as Philadelphia police commissioner from 1968 to 1971 and mayor of Philadelphia from 1972 to 1980. He was a member of the Democratic Party throughout the entirety of his career in public office. He switched to the Republican Party in 1986 and campaigned as a Republican for the final five years of his life.
The 2007 Philadelphia mayoral election was held on November 6,2007 when Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,United States elected Michael Nutter as the Mayor of Philadelphia starting in 2008. The incumbent mayor,John F. Street was barred from seeking a third term because of term limits. The Democratic Party primary campaign saw two well-known,well-funded Philadelphia congressmen –Bob Brady and Chaka Fattah –eclipsed by self-funding businessman Tom Knox and reformist former Philadelphia City Council member Nutter,who won by a surprisingly large margin in the primary election on May 15. He went on to face Republican Party nominee Al Taubenberger in the general election,which he won by a large margin and with the lowest voter turnout in a Philadelphia mayoral election without an incumbent since 1951. Mayor Nutter was sworn in on January 7,2008.
Cherelle L. Parker is an American politician from Philadelphia. A member of the Democratic Party,she served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives,representing the 200th district from 2005 until 2015. Helen Gym is an American politician. She was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Philadelphia City Council. She was first elected to Council in 2015 and served until 2022,when she resigned to run in the 2023 Philadelphia mayoral election. Gym finished in a distant third place behind Cherelle Parker.

Primaries were held on May 17,2022. Shapiro won the Democratic nomination after running unopposed and Mastriano won the Republican nomination with 44% of the vote. Mastriano's nomination drew attention due to his far-right political views.
The 2023 Philadelphia mayoral election will be held on November 7,2023 to elect the mayor of Philadelphia. Nominees for the Democratic and Republican parties were selected through primaries on May 16,2023.
