Dermot Hannafin (born in Fenit, County Kerry - died 6 April 2012) was a Gaelic footballer with his local club Castleisland Desmonds and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1950 until 1952. [2] His son, also Dermot, played with Kerry during the 1980s and 1990s.

Playing career

Club

Hannafin played his club football with his local Castleisland Desmonds club and enjoyed some success. He won a county SFC with Castleisland District in 1950, their only success to date.

Intercounty

Hannafin also played with Kerry from 1950 to 1953. He won Munster Championship medals in 1950, '51 and '53 and an All Ireland medal in 1953. The All Ireland final of 1953 was he only game of the championship that year.

Dr Dave Geaney is an All-Ireland medal holder. He played in his first All-Ireland final in 1959 at the age of 19 having played schoolboys rugby for Munster earlier in the year. He played in the All-Ireland semi-final in 1962 against Dublin.He played in 3 Munster finals. He was manager of the Castleisland Desmonds Senior team for a good number of years and was trainer when they won the All-Ireland Club title in 1985 when they defeated St. Vincent's (Dublin) in the final on St. Patrick's Day. He was manager for the glory period of Desmonds, and highlights include first North Kerry Senior Football Championship win, Intermediate and club championship wins, two All-Ireland club finals in a row as well as being manager for Desmonds only county final appearance in a county final when they were beaten by eventual All-Ireland Champions, Dr. Crokes. He was also manager of Castleisland District team in the 1979 County final. Geaney was a Kerry GAA medical officer from 1975 to 2012. He was named by new Kerry manager Pat O'Shea as a selector for the 2007 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Kerry won the 2007 championship and reached the 2008 final.

Charlie Nelligan is an Irish former sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Castleisland Desmonds and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1974 until 1991. He also played soccer with Home Farm in Dublin and with the Irish amateur team.

Ger Reidy, is a GAA goalkeeper currently playing for Castleisland Desmonds and Kerry. He made his intercounty debut in the National League fixture vs. Donegal in Austin Stack Park, Tralee. He went on to play in 3 further matches in Kerry's ultimately successful 2009 Allianz National Football League Division 1 campaign against Derry, Westmeath and Galway conceding only one goal.

Mary Geaney is an Irish sportswoman. She played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Kerry, senior camogie for Cork and is also a former Ireland women's field hockey international. In 1976 she captained Kerry when they won the All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship and in 1980 she captained Cork when they won the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship. She was the first player to captain a team to both championships. As a field hockey international, she was a member of the Ireland team that won the 1983 Women's Intercontinental Cup. In 2010 she was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame.

Dermot Hanifin is a former Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Castleisland Desmonds and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1985 until 1993. His father, also Dermot, played with Kerry during the 1950s.

Peter O'Leary was a Gaelic football goalkeeper from County Kerry. He played with the Kerry senior them for 10 years mainly in the National League but also played 6 Championship games. He was part of the Kerry team that were shocked by Clare in the 1992 Munster Football final. He won 1 All Ireland Senior medals as a sub in 2000. He had been a substitute in the 1997 triumph also, but did not receive a medal. He also won a National League medal as a sub in 1997. He had much success at under age level with Kerry winning an All Ireland minor medal in 1988 and an Under 21 medal in 1990.

Ronan O'Connor is a Gaelic footballer from County Kerry. He played with Kerry at all levels from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. He then moved on to the Under 21 team and again won a Munster Championship in 2002. In 2002 he also joined the Senior team that made it to the All Ireland final but lost out to Armagh. He later went on to win an All Ireland medal in 2004 coming on as a sub in the final win over Mayo. He also won a National League medal in 2006.

John Brennan is a former Gaelic footballer who played with Castleisland Desmonds and Kerry. He won an All Ireland Under 21 title in 1996. He played one championship game in the first round of the 1997 championship.

Michael Loftus is an Irish former Gaelic footballer, referee and Gaelic games administrator. His league and championship career at senior level with the Mayo county team lasted four seasons from 1949 until 1953.

Roger Kirwan was an Irish Gaelic footballer. His championship career with the Waterford, Wexford and Kerry senior teams spanned ten seasons from 1898 until 1907.
