Derrick Williams (born March 25, 1982) is an American former track and field athlete who competed in the 400-meter hurdles. He was a finalist at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics and holds a personal record of 48.26 seconds.

Career

Williams attended GlenOak High School in Stark County, Ohio and took part in track while there. After graduating in 2001 he went on to attend junior college at Barton Community College. Working with coach Lance Brauman (who also trained fellow African-American athlete Tyson Gay), [1] [2] he became the national junior college champion in the 110-meter hurdles in 2001 before going on to take the 400 m hurdles title two years later. [3]

After leaving college he failed to improve over the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but after a move to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2006 he improved his personal record to 48.68 seconds. This ranked him twelfth in the world for the event that year. [4] He also won at the Adidas Track Classic that year. In spite of this, he did not finish his race at the 2006 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships so did not progress nationally. [3]

The peak of Williams' career came in 2007. That year he placed third at the 2007 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships behind James Carter and Kerron Clement in a lifetime best of 48.26 seconds. [5] On the circuit he won at the Kingston meet, was third at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Having made the American team for the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, he won his first heat, [6] then successfully progressed through the semi-finals. All three Americans – Williams, Clement and Carter – were in the final. Williams was the slowest of the three, fading in the latter stages of the race to finish seventh. [2] [7] Williams ranked within the global top ten that season. [8]

Williams failed to build on his global debut and his career went into decline in the 2008 season. He was eliminated in the 2008 United States Olympic Trials at the quarter-finals stage and recorded a season's best of 49.75 seconds for fourth at the adidas Track Classic. [3] He ranked outside the top 50 that year and never ran as fast again. He placed in the world top fifty for the last time in 2009, with a time of 49.77 seconds. [9] [10]

He was the fastest man in the world in the 1994 and 1996 seasons, and holds a personal record of 47.54 seconds. Adkins was a two-time national champion at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Angelo F. Taylor is an American track and field athlete, winner of 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics. His personal record for the hurdles event is 47.25 seconds. His time puts him in a tie with Félix Sánchez for the #14 performer of all time. Sánchez also won two Olympic gold medals, in 2004 between Taylor's two golds and 2012, immediately following. Taylor also has a 400-meter dash best of 44.05 seconds, ranking him as the #25 performer of all time, superior to any other athlete who has made a serious effort in the 400 metres hurdles. He won the bronze medal in the 400 m at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics.

In 2008 Anderson was 400 meter hurdles Junior World Champion and holds the second fastest high school time recorded in the 300m hurdles. He was born and raised in Woodland Hills, California and attended Taft High School. After winning the 2011 Outdoor Championships, Anderson had the competed for team USA at the world championships. He also participated in the 2016 Olympic trials in which he finished as a finalist.

Charonda Regina Williams is an American track and field athlete who competes in the sprint events. She is a 200-meter dash specialist and has a personal record of 22.55 seconds. She represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in that event. She also runs in the 100-meter dash and has a best of 11.14 seconds.

Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters hurdles. She is the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, becoming at the latter the then-second-fastest woman of all time in the event with her personal best of 51.58 seconds. Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She was the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. At both the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo Games, she also took gold as part of women's 4 × 400 metres relay team.

His winning time of 43.48 s from the 2019 World Championships is the Bahamian record and makes him the sixth-fastest man in the history of the event. Gardiner also owns the Bahamian records in the outdoor 300 m and 200 m, with times of 31.83 s and 19.75 s respectively, and the world best in the indoor 300 m at 31.56 s.

Kendall Baisden is an American track and field sprinter who specializes in the 400-meter dash. She holds a personal record of 50.46 seconds for the distance, set in 2014.

Nicholas Kiplagat Bett was a Kenyan track and field athlete who competed in the 400 metres hurdles. His personal best for the event is 47.79 seconds. He was a world champion in the event, having won in 2015, and a two-time bronze medallist at the African Championships in Athletics. He died in a road accident in Kenya at the age of 28.

He was born and grew up in Saudi Arabia but chose to represent Mauritania – his father's homeland – before eventually switching allegiance to Qatar and moving to Doha in 2015. He became eligible to compete for his adopted country in May 2016. He was the second person to run the 400m hurdle event in less than 47 seconds.

Ricky Babineaux is an American male former track and field sprinter who specialized in the 400-meter dash, in which he has a personal record of 46.16 seconds. He was a gold medallist in the 4 × 400-meter relay at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships, running for the United States in the heats to top the qualifiers with a time of 3:04.36 minutes alongside Clayton Parros, Kind Butler III, and Calvin Smith Jr.
