Design Triangle was a transport design firm, based in Cambridge, UK. Founded in 1986, Design Triangle specializes in the design of the interiors and exteriors of vehicles (and vessels) for public transport, particularly rail passenger cars. The company was dissolved in 2017. [1]

Rail Vehicles

Design Triangle is best known for the concept design of the interior and exterior of the Heathrow Express Class 332 trains and the exterior design of the MTR Hong Kong Airport Express. [2] Other published work includes the design of the larnrod Eireann Inter-City Mark 4 trains [3] and the interior concept design for the Class 378 rail cars for London Overground. [4] [5] Design Triangle also recently redesigned the Swiss Railways’ range of vehicle interiors. [6]

According to Jane's World Railways, [7] other projects include interior and exterior concept designs for Rotterdam Metro, STIB Brussels Tramway 2000, Connex Melbourne X'Trapolis 100 trains, Spoornet 9E loco driver's cab refurbishment, design of the exterior and driver's cab for Hong Kong's MTR Airport Express train, passenger flow studies for DLR Docklands Light Railway, interior design for BAE Systems on Kawasaki's MARC III Bi-Level coaches, interior design concepts for Madrid Metro and rail seat prototypes for KAB Seating.

Marine

Design Triangle has created industrial design concepts for the exteriors and interiors of fast ferries and water taxis for Damen Shipyards, including the Dubai Water Taxi [8] [9] and the Damen DFF 3207 low wash catamaran for Dubai. [10]

Services

Design Triangle designs the form, aesthetics and layout of vehicles, including interiors, exteriors and driver’s cabs, from industrial design concepts to 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings. Services are provided to railway companies, rail vehicle manufacturers and component manufacturers. [11]

Award

At the Design Business Association's Design Effectiveness Awards [12] in 2000, Design Triangle won the Grand Prix and Design Management awards [13] for the design of the Class 332 trains, as a collaborative team with BAA Heathrow Express, Wolff Olins and Glazer.

The British Rail Class 317 is an electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger train constructed by British Rail Engineering Limited in two batches: 48 sets were produced in 1981–82 and 24 sets in 1985–87. They were the first of several classes of British Rail EMU to be based on the all-steel Mark 3 bodyshell, departing from the PEP-aluminium design which had spawned the earlier Class 313 to Class 315, Class 507 and Class 508. The Mark 3 bodyshell was also the basis of Class 318, Class 455 and the diesel Class 150. The Class 317 uses overhead alternating current electrification. All units were withdrawn in July 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">MTR Adtranz–CAF EMU</span> EMU trainset operated by the Hong Kong MTR

The Adtranz-CAF EMU is an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train that operates on the MTR rapid transit railway system in Hong Kong. There are two variants, one used on the conventional Tung Chung line, and a more luxurious version used on the Airport Express. The vehicle interiors were designed for MTR by Jones Garrard and Design Triangle, while the vehicle exterior and driver's cab interior were designed in the UK by Design Triangle. These two variations are built jointly by Adtranz and Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) and manufactured in Spain in 1996-7.

The CAF Mark 4 are railway carriages operated by Iarnród Éireann in Ireland on the InterCity service from Dublin to Cork. These carriages have no connection to the British Rail Mark 4.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vibrant Express</span> Hong Kong high-speed train

Vibrant Express, also known as MTR CRH380A or MTR380A is a high-speed train operated by Hong Kong government-owned public transport operator MTR. It was manufactured by Chinese state-owned manufacturer CSR Qingdao Sifang based on the CRH380A Hexie EMUs developed for China Railway. Nine 8-car trainsets were ordered by the Hong Kong government through the MTR Corporation and delivered between 2016-17. It is the first high-speed train produced by CRRC not operated by China Railway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">British Rail Class 387</span> Class of British Electrostar electric multiple units

The British Rail Class 387 Electrostar is a type of electric multiple unit passenger train built by Bombardier Transportation. They are part of the Electrostar family of trains. A total of 107 units were built, with the first train entering service with Thameslink in December 2014. The trains are currently in service with Great Western Railway, Govia Thameslink Railway, and Heathrow Express. The Class 387 is a variation of the Class 379 with dual-voltage capability which allows units to run on 750 V DC third rail, as well as use 25 kV AC OLE. The class were the final rolling stock orders from the Bombardier Electrostar family with 2,805 vehicles built over 18 years between 1999 and 2017.

TfL Rail was the concession which operated commuter services on two separate railway lines in London, England and its environs whilst the Crossrail construction project linking these lines was underway. It ran from 2015 until May 2022, upon the opening of the Crossrail central section, when TfL Rail was rebranded as Elizabeth line and the name was discontinued.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">MTR CRRC Changchun EMU</span> Model of electric multiple unit operated by the MTR

The MTR CRRC Changchun EMU is a model of heavy rail electric multiple units of the Mass Transit Railway in Hong Kong. The 8-car sets are manufactured by Changchun Railway Vehicles for the East West Corridor, to operate alongside extended SP1900 sets (1151) from the West Rail line. They are currently in service on the Tuen Ma line.
