Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President is a 2011 nonfiction book by Candice Millard covering the life and assassination of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, as well as his assassin, Charles J. Guiteau. [1] [2] Published by Doubleday (an imprint of Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, owned by Random House [3] ) on 20 September 2011, it later went on to win the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime in 2012.
