The Diamniadio Olympic Stadium, also known as the Stade Me. Abdoulaye Wade (French: Stade olympique de Diamniadio) is a multi-purpose stadium, which can host football, rugby and athletics, in Diamniadio, in Dakar, Senegal. It is the national stadium of the Senegal national football team. The stadium which has a capacity of 50,000 designed by Tabanlıoğlu Architects and built by Summa. [1] [2] It will host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics. [3]
The stadium was designed by the Turkish architectural office Tabanlıoğlu Architects. [4]
The stadium was built in 18 months by the Turkish construction company Summa. [5] The construction covered an area of 88,000 square metres (22 acres). The contract type was a design–build turnkey project. [6]
The cost of the construction was reported to be 156 billion CFA francs ($270 million). [7]
The stadium was officially inaugurated by Senegalese President Macky Sall, in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Liberian President George Weah and Gambian President Adama Barrow. The first match was a game between a selection from various generations of the Senegal national football team against a selection of African football legends. The Senegalese team composed of player such as El Hadj Diouf, Boubacar Sarr, Demba Ba, Mamadou Niang, Moussa Sow, Lamine Diatta, Omar Daf, Khalilou Fadiga, Oumar Sène, Thierno Youm, Racine Kane and Souleymane Sané. The other team consisted of players such as Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, Emmanuel Adebayor, Jay-Jay Okocha, Asamoah Gyan, Patrick Mboma, Moustapha Hadji, Samuel Kuffour, Shabani Nonda and Jonathan Pitroipa. [9] [10] The match ended in a 1–1 draw.
The rest of the ceremony was marked by cultural and musical performances by stars of Senegalese music, Ismaël Lô, Baaba Maal and Youssou N'Dour. [10]
Abdoulaye Wade is a French then Senegalese politician who was President of Senegal from 2000 to 2012. He is also the Secretary-General of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), having led the party since it was founded in 1974. A long-time opposition leader, he ran for President four times, beginning in 1978, before he was elected in 2000. He won re-election in 2007 with a majority in the first round, but in 2012 he was defeated in a controversial bid for a third term.
Idrissa Seck is a Senegalese politician who was Prime Minister of Senegal from November 2002 to July 2004. He was a leading member of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) and was considered a protégé of President Abdoulaye Wade, but he subsequently went into opposition and was a candidate in the February 2007 presidential election, coming second place with about 15% of the vote.
Macky Sall is a Senegalese politician who has been President of Senegal since April 2012. He was re-elected President in the first round voting in February 2019. Under President Abdoulaye Wade, Sall was Prime Minister of Senegal from July 2004 to June 2007 and President of the National Assembly from June 2007 to November 2008. He was the Mayor of Fatick from 2002 to 2008 and held that post again from 2009 to 2012. Sall was a long-time member of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS). After coming into conflict with Wade, he was removed from his post as President of the National Assembly in November 2008; he consequently founded his own party named the Alliance for the Republic (APR) and joined the opposition. Placing second in the first round of the 2012 presidential election, he won the backing of other opposition candidates and prevailed over Wade in the second round of voting, held on 25 March 2012. He is the first president born after Senegalese independence from France.
The Socialist Party of Senegal is a political party in Senegal. It was the ruling party in Senegal from independence in 1960 until 2000. In the 2000 presidential election, the party's candidate and previous incumbent, Abdou Diof, was defeated by the leader of the Senegalese Democratic Party, Abdoulaye Wade. Ousmane Tanor Dieng has been the First Secretary of the party since 1996 and was the presidential candidate in 2007 and 2012. The best-known figure of the Socialist Party was Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first President of Senegal.
Moustapha Niasse is a Senegalese politician and diplomat who has been President of the National Assembly from 2012 until 2022. He served in the government of Senegal as Foreign Minister of Senegal from 1978 to 1984 and again from 1993 to 1998. He was Prime Minister of Senegal for a few weeks in 1983, and he held that position again from 2000 to 2001.

Amath Dansokho was a Senegalese politician. He was Secretary-General of the Party of Independence and Work (PIT) for years; he also served in the government of Senegal as Minister of Urban Planning and Housing from 1991 to 1995 and again, briefly, in 2000. He was mayor of Kédougou for a time. Since 2012, he was a special adviser to the president of Senegal; he was also honorary president of the PIT.
Bruno Jean Cornil Metsu was a French footballer and football manager. During his senior playing career from 1973 to 1987, he played for seven different clubs in his native France.
Presidential elections were held in Senegal on 25 February 2007. Incumbent president Abdoulaye Wade was re-elected in the first round with almost 56% of the vote.
Parliamentary elections were held in Senegal on 3 June 2007. They had originally been planned to be held together with the presidential election on 25 February 2007, but were postponed. Fourteen parties or coalitions participated in the elections, but they were marked by a major opposition boycott. The ruling Sopi Coalition won 131 seats, including all 90 of the seats elected by majority voting.

Later, he worked as a diplomat for the United Nations, and since 2014 he has been Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Central Africa.

Karim Meïssa Wade is a Senegalese politician who served in the government of Senegal as Minister of State for International Cooperation, Regional Development, Air Transport, and Infrastructure from May 2009 to April 2012. He is the son of Abdoulaye Wade, who was President of Senegal from 2000 to 2012. Before joining the government, Karim Wade was President of the National Agency for the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and served as an advisor to his father. He was widely seen as a possible successor to his father as president, and his father was widely believed to be grooming him for the position.
Souleymane Ndéné Ndiaye is a Senegalese politician who was Prime Minister of Senegal from 2009 to 2012. He was Minister of the Civil Service and Labour in 2005, Director of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic from 2005 to 2007, and Minister of State for the Maritime Economy from 2007 to 2009. A lawyer by profession, Ndiaye is the president of the National Union for the People (UNP). He was also Mayor of Guinguinéo.
Presidential elections were held in Senegal on 26 February 2012, amidst controversy over the constitutional validity of a third term for incumbent president Abdoulaye Wade. In the runoff on 25 March, Macky Sall defeated the incumbent president. The 2015 documentary film Incorruptible chronicles both campaigns as well as the youth movement Y'en a Marre, which led protests against Wade's administration.
The Alliance for the Republic–Yakaar is a political party in Senegal. It was formed by former Prime Minister and current president Macky Sall after his departure from the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) in December 2008. Macky Sall was also APR's candidate in the 2012 presidential election in which he defeated incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade. APR was joined by several former members of the PDS.

The Wallu Sénégal Grand Coalition is a Senegalese opposition political coalition led by the 97-year-old ex-president of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, and his Senegalese Democratic Party. The party has entered into an alliance with the opposition Yewwi Askan Wi coalition to form a majority in the 2022 parliamentary election. As a result of the election the coalition obtained 24 seats becoming the third largest group in the National Assembly.
