A megacity is a very large city,typically with a population of more than 10 million people. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its 2018 "World Urbanization Prospects" report defines megacities as urban agglomerations with over 10 million inhabitants. A University of Bonn report holds that they are "usually defined as metropolitan areas with a total population of 10 million or more people". Elsewhere in other sources,from five to eight million is considered the minimum threshold,along with a population density of at least 2,000 per square kilometre. The terms conurbation,metropolis,and metroplex are also applied to the latter.
Survivalism is a social movement of individuals or groups who proactively prepare for emergencies,such as natural disasters,and other disasters causing disruption to social order caused by political or economic crises. Preparations may anticipate short-term scenarios or long-term,on scales ranging from personal adversity,to local disruption of services,to international or global catastrophe. There is no bright line dividing general emergency preparedness from prepping in the form of survivalism,but a qualitative distinction is often recognized whereby preppers/survivalists prepare especially extensively because they have higher estimations of the risk of catastrophes happening. Nonetheless,prepping can be as limited as preparing for a personal emergency,or it can be as extensive as a personal identity or collective identity with a devoted lifestyle.

Lakeshore East is a master-planned mixed use urban development being built by the Magellan Development Group in the Loop community area of Chicago in Cook County,Illinois,United States. The development is bordered by Wacker Drive to the north,Columbus Drive to the west,Lake Shore Drive to the east,and East Randolph Street to the south. Development continued with revised plans for more buildings in 2018 and continuing construction of the Vista Tower in 2019.

An urban refugee is a refugee who decided or was obliged to settle in an urban area rather than in a refugee camp in the country or territory where the person fled to. More than 60% of the world's refugee population and 80% of internally displaced persons (IDP) under UNHCR mandate live in urban environments. In 2009,their number was around 5.5 million people. "Urban refugee" is not a recognized legal term in the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. However,the UNHCR has adopted a 'Policy on Refugee Protection and Solutions in Urban Areas' in 2009.

Halliday was a city council member for 10 years prior to her election as mayor. She follows Michael Sweeney,who declined to seek the office in 2014. Halliday has a B.A. in American studies from Mary Washington College,then associated with the University of Virginia. She pursued graduate work in journalism and urban studies at the University of Maryland. She has worked as a writer/editor for the Cecil Whig in Maryland,and for a California insurance company,retiring from that position in 2008 after 29 years. Her term began in July 2014.
