Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). It is the second largest state in northeastern India by area and the largest in terms of population, with more than 31 million inhabitants. The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22-kilometre-wide (14 mi) strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. Assamese and Boro for Bodoland Territorial Region are the official languages of Assam. Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician who serving as 9th Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways since 2024. He also the Member of the Rajya Sabha representing Assam since 2021 and also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs since 2021. He is the 14th Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021 and the former of Assam Legislative Assembly from Majuli from 2016 until he resigned in 2021 and from Moran constituency from 2001 to 2004. Sonowal earlier served as the Assam state unit President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2012 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2016. He has also served as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016 and the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development from 2014 to 2014 and the member of the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur from 2014 to 2016 and from Dibrugarh from 2004 to 2009. He was also the member of the Asom Gana Parishad from 2001 to 2011.
Gulab Chand Kataria is an Indian politician who is serving as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh since 31 July 2024. He was the 31st Governor of Assam from 22 February 2023 to 29 July 2024. He was a minister in the Government of Rajasthan from 2013 till 2018, 2003 to 2008 and from 1993 to 1998. He is a senior leader of BJP in Rajasthan and is also a member of central working committee of the party. He hails from Udaipur and has represented it in 9th Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian Parliament from Udaipur from 1989 to 1991. He was booked by the C.B.I. in the Sheikh encounter killing. during the rule of the Congress Government at the Centre, but was found not guilty by the Court. He was also the Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 2019 till 2023, 2013 to 2013 and from 2002 to 2003. He was the President of Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajasthan state unit from 1999 to 2000. He was also the member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Udaipur from 2003 to 2023 and from 1977 to 1986 and from Bari Sadri from 1993 to 2003.
Bijoya Chakravarty, is an Indian politician of Bharatiya Janata Party. She served as the Member of the Lok Sabha from Gauhati from 2009 to 2019 and from 1999 to 2004. She was the Union Minister of State for Water Resources from 1999 to 2004. She was also the Member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1992 as a member of the Asom Gana Parishad. She was one of the first members of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She was awarded India's fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2021.
The Assam Tribune is an Indian English daily newspaper published from Guwahati and Dibrugarh, Assam. With over 700,000 copies of current circulation and a readership of over 3 million, it is the highest circulated English daily in northeastern India. The newspaper was founded way back in 1939 in Gauhati.
Ranee Narah is an Indian politician from Assam and a member of the Indian National Congress. She represented Assam as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022. She also represented Lakhimpur in the Lok Sabha from 1998 to 2004, and again from 2009 to 2014. Narah served as the Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs in the Government of India from 2012 to 2014. Her husband, Bharat Narah, is also a member of the Indian National Congress, and the MLA of Naoboicha.
Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is an Indian businessman, politician, philanthropist and Islamic theologian from the state of Assam. He is the state-president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind for Assam. He was the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Dhubri constituency from 2009 to 2024 until he lost the election to Rakibul Hussain of Indian National Congress by a margin of more than 10 lakh votes. He's the Founder and President of the All India United Democratic Front since 2005. He is also Chief Executive Officer of a non-profit organization, Ajmal Foundation which established 25 educational institutions, schools, and hospitals.
Dainik Jugasankha, also transliterated Dainik Yugashankha, is a Bengali daily newspaper published simultaneously from Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar, Siliguri and Durgapur. With a circulation of around 150,000 copies, it is one of the top ten newspapers in Assam.
The Bharat Ratna Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy, commonly known as Bordoloi Trophy, is a premier annual Indian football tournament held in Guwahati and organized by Guwahati Sports Association (GSA). The tournament was established in 1952 by Gauhati Town Club. It is named after Assam's first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi. The prestigious tournament comprises some top clubs from the northeast and rest of India. Clubs from Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Iran and Uzbekistan have also participated in this major championship. Abahani Limited of Bangladesh lifted the 2010 edition trophy.
Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician and lawyer serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015 and soon was made convenor of NEDA. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected since 2001.
Keshab Mahanta is an Indian politician of Asom Gana Parishad. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from the Kaliabor Constituency of Assam from 1996 to 1998 as a member of the Asom Gana Parishad. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Kaliabor constituency since 2006. He is also serving as the minister of Health and Family Welfare and Science and Technology, Information and Technology Departments, Government of Assam in the Sarma Ministry since 2021 and the former minister of Water Resources and Science and Technology, Information and Technology Departments,Government of Assam from 2016 to 2021 in the Sonowal ministry. He was also working president of Asom Gana Parishad since 2014.
The Assam Legislative Assembly Election of 2016 was held in two phases, on 4 and 11 April 2016, to elect members of the 126 constituencies in Assam, a state in North-eastern India. The overall voter turnout was 84.72%, which set a new record for Assam. The turnout was an increase from the 2011 Assembly election figure of 75%.
Dr. Hemoprova Saikia is an Indian politician who was the minister of handloom and textiles in the government of Assam from 2001 to 2006. She was a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly representing Nazira constituency from 1996 to 2006.She was also chairman of Assam Tourism Development Corporation. She was the wife of the former chief minister of Assam, Hiteswar Saikia, and her son Debabrata Saikia is leader of the opposition in the Assembly.
Pradan Baruah is an Indian politician who is member of Parliament and elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur seat since November 2016. He won the by-election in November 2016, after the sitting member Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from the seat in May 2016 after becoming the Chief Minister of Assam. He was earlier the member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Dhemaji Assembly constituency in Dhemaji district.
The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election was the 15th quinquennial legislative assembly election held in the Indian state of Assam from March 27 to April 6 in three phases, to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the result declared on Sunday, 2 May. The term of the previous Fourteenth Legislative Assembly of Assam ended on 31 May 2021.
