Dimitrios S. Nikolopoulos (born August 25, 1973) is a Greek-British computer scientist, the John W. Hancock Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, [1] [2] and an IEEE Fellow. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Education

In 1996, Nikolopoulos completed his bachelor's in computer engineering and informatics at the University of Patras. [1] [2] In 1997 he completed his master's and in 2000 he completed his Ph.D. in computer engineering at the same University. [7] His Ph.D. thesis research on improving data access locality on shared memory multiprocessors with non-uniform memory access latency received the Best Technical Paper Award from the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference. [6]

Career

In 2001, he started his academic career as a visiting Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2002, he joined the College of William & Mary, as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science. In 2006, he became an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. In 2009, he moved back to Greece as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Crete and a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Computer Science at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas. [6]

In 2012, he was appointed to the Chair of High Performance and Distributed Computing, and as a Professor and Director of Research at Queens University Belfast. In 2016, he was also appointed as the Head of the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. [3] [4] In 2018, he became the director of the Institute on Electronics, Communications and Information Technology. In 2019 he moved back to Virginia Tech as the John W. Hancock Professor of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science. [6] [8]

Awards and Recognition

Nikolopoulos is an IEEE Fellow, [3] [4] an elected Royal Society Wolfson Fellow, a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. Additionally, he holds the titles of Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery [1] and Distinguished Visitor of the IEEE Computer Society. [6]

He holds the position of a Distinguished Research Staff member in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Turing Fellowship in the School of Mathematics at the University of Manchester, and is an adjunct professor and teacher in the Computer Science Department at Rice University. He served as a faculty fellow at the Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study (2014–2018). Dongarra is the founding director of the Innovative Computing Laboratory at the University of Tennessee. He was the recipient of the Turing Award in 2021.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center is a public research center located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It hosts MareNostrum, a 13.7 Petaflops, Intel Xeon Platinum-based supercomputer, which also includes clusters of emerging technologies. In June 2017, it ranked 13th in the world. As of November 2022, it dropped to 88th. It is expected to host one of Europe's first quantum computers.

Mateo Valero Cortés is a Spanish computer architect. His research encompasses different concepts within the field of computer architecture, a discipline in which he has published more than 700 papers in journals, conference proceedings and books. Valero has received numerous awards, including the Eckert–Mauchly Award in 2007, for "extraordinary leadership in building a world class computer architecture research center, for seminal contributions in the areas of vector computing and multithreading, and for pioneering basic new approaches to instruction-level parallelism." <span class="mw-page-title-main">Tachyon (software)</span>

Tachyon is a parallel/multiprocessor ray tracing software. It is a parallel ray tracing library for use on distributed memory parallel computers, shared memory computers, and clusters of workstations. Tachyon implements rendering features such as ambient occlusion lighting, depth-of-field focal blur, shadows, reflections, and others. It was originally developed for the Intel iPSC/860 by John Stone for his M.S. thesis at University of Missouri-Rolla. Tachyon subsequently became a more functional and complete ray tracing engine, and it is now incorporated into a number of other open source software packages such as VMD, and SageMath. Tachyon is released under a permissive license.

He was the director of the High Performance Computing Lab at the Ohio State University. Nader Bagherzadeh is a professor of computer engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as a chair from 1998 to 2003. Bagherzadeh has been involved in research and development in the areas of: Computer Architecture, Reconfigurable Computing, VLSI Chip Design, Network-on-Chip, 3D chips, Sensor Networks, Computer Graphics, Memory and Embedded Systems. Bagherzadeh was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2014 for contributions to the design and analysis of coarse-grained reconfigurable processor architectures. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). As of 2022, Vuduc serves as Vice President of the SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing. Michela Taufer is an Italian-American computer scientist and holds the Jack Dongarra Professorship in High Performance Computing within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
