The Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is the administrative head of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the national academy for fine and performing arts in Bangladesh. The position is responsible for the overall administration of the academy and the implementation of decisions taken by the Executive Council (Shilpakala Academy Parishad), which is headed by the Minister of Cultural Affairs. [1] The Director General is appointed by the Government of Bangladesh on a contractual basis, typically for a term of one to two years, subject to relinquishing other professional engagements.
The position was established upon the founding of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 19 February 1974, under the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Act, during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman . Initially, the academy focused on promoting fine arts, music, dance, and theatre across the country through its central headquarters in Dhaka and branches in all 64 districts. Over the years, the role has seen frequent changes, particularly in periods of political transition. For instance, following the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, there were multiple leadership shifts in quick succession, including resignations and interim appointments. [2] The Director General oversees seven departments: Research and Publication, Fine Arts, Music and Dance, Dramatics, Training, Programme Production, and Administration and Finance. [3]
The Director General is appointed via gazette notification by the Ministry of Public Administration, often on the recommendation of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The appointee must be a prominent figure in the arts, literature, or culture, with no concurrent affiliations to other organizations. [4] [5]
