The first FINA World Championships in Aquatics were held in the Tašmajdan Sports Centre in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, from August 31 to September 9, 1973.

The diving portion of the 2011 World Aquatics Championships was held July 16–24 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China. Chinese divers dominated, winning all 10 gold medals.
The 2012 European Aquatics Championships were held from 14–27 May 2012 in Debrecen, Hungary and Eindhoven, Netherlands. The 2012 European Swimming Championships were to take place in Antwerp, Belgium, but were reallocated to the City of Debrecen and were held on the same dates as previously planned, from 21 to 27 May. The Diving Championships were held in Eindhoven from 15 to 20 May. The Synchronised Swimming discipline, originally intended to take place in Antwerp, have also been reallocated, with its continental titles having been contested in Eindhoven.
Originally, the Championships had been awarded to Vienna, but later they backed out due to the Great Recession.
The synchronised swimming competition at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships was held from July 17 to July 23.
The men's decathlon event at the 2013 Summer Universiade was held on 8–9 July.
The women's heptathlon event at the 2013 Summer Universiade was held on 10–11 July.
The 31st European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held from 19 to 25 May 2014 at the Arena Armeec in Sofia, Bulgaria.
