Note: Originally, the Open water events were scheduled to occur on Sunday, July 19 (5K), Tuesday, July 21 (women's 10K) and Thursday, July 23 (women's 25K); however the FINA Bureau on July 18, 2009, altered the open water schedule due to weather conditions in Ostia. [1]

FINA World Aquatics Championships

The FINA World Championships or World Aquatics Championships are the World Championships for aquatics sports: swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. They are run by FINA, and all swimming events are contested in a long course (50-metre) pool.

The 10th FINA World Aquatics Championships were held July 12–27, 2003 in Barcelona, Spain. The championships featured competition in all 5 of FINA's disciplines: Swimming, Diving, Synchronised swimming, Water Polo, and Open Water Swimming.

The 2007 World Aquatics Championships, or the XII FINA World Championships, were held in Melbourne, Australia from 17 March to 1 April 2007. The competition took place at three locations in central Melbourne: the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, St Kilda Beach, and Rod Laver Arena in a temporary pool christened the Susie O'Neill Pool.

The 2009 World Aquatics Championships or the XIII FINA World Championships were held in Rome, Italy from 18 July to 2 August 2009. The 2009 Championships featured competition in all 5 aquatics disciplines: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo.

2011 World Aquatics Championships 14th FINA World Championships

The 14th FINA World Championships were held on 16–31 July 2011 in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. The 2011 World Championships featured five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming. At this championships, synchronized swimmer Natalia Ishchenko, of Russia, was the most decorated competitor winning all six gold medals of her events, at solo, duet and team routines. These championships served as qualifying stages for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

2013 World Aquatics Championships 15th FINA World Championships

The 15th FINA World Championships were held from 20 July to 4 August in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The 2013 World Championships featured 6 aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, high diving, open water, and synchronised swimming.

The Women's 5K race at the 2009 World Championships occurred on Tuesday, 21 July at Ostia Beach in Rome, Italy. In total, 42 Women from 26 countries competed in the race.

The men's 5 km race at the 2009 World Championships occurred on Tuesday, 21 July at Ostia Beach in Rome, Italy. In total, 41 participants from 24 countries competed in the race.

The women's 10K race at the 2009 World Championships occurred on Wednesday, 22 July at Ostia Beach in Rome, Italian. In total, 45 women from 26 countries competed in the race.

The men's 10K race at the 2009 World Championships occurred on Wednesday, July 22 at Ostia Beach in Rome, Italy. In total, 48 males from 27 countries were entered in the race.

The Women's 25 km Open Water swimming race of the 2009 World Aquatics Championships took place on Saturday July 25, at Ostia beach in Rome. 18 women from 10 different countries competed. Angela Maurer of Germany took home the gold with a time of 5:47:48.0 just pipping Anna Uvarova at the finish by 3.9 seconds.

2010 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships

The 6th FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships was being held July 15–23, 2010 in Lac Saint-Jean near Roberval, Quebec, Canada.

Eva Fabian American-Israeli open water swimmer

Eva Fabian is an American-Israeli open water swimmer. She was the 2010 world champion in the 5-kilometer swim, and won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in the women's 10k.

United States at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships Sporting event delegation

The American team competed at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China from July 16 to July 31. The United States topped the gold medal count in the competition with 17 golds and finished the competition with 32 total medals, behind China's 36. 16 of the 17 gold medals came from the swimming competition and one came from the open water swimming competition. Individually, Michael Phelps won the most overall medals in the competition with seven. Ryan Lochte won the most gold medals among the male competitors with five and finished the competition with six medals total.

Ana Marcela Cunha Brazilian swimmer

Ana Marcela Jesus Soares da Cunha is a Brazilian swimmer who specializes in the open water marathon. She is considered one of the best open water swimmers in history, having obtained, until 2019, 11 medals in World Swimming Championships, 5 being gold, in addition to medals and titles in all relevant existing competitions. Champion of the world's Greatest Open Water Swimmer Award six times. Her countless achievements are comparable only to those of Larisa Ilchenko, another multimedallist in World Championships.

The Open water swimming portion of the 2013 World Aquatics Championships was held between July 20–27 in Barcelona, Spain, in Moll de la Fusta.
