Dixie Marshall (born March 1963) is a Western Australian former television news presenter and, from 2011 to 2017, was the media relations director, and then strategic communications director, for Colin Barnett, the Premier of Western Australia. [1] [2]

Career

Marshall joined the Nine Network in Perth in 1984 as a cadet reporter. She became one of Australia's first female football commentators when she joined the Seven Network in Melbourne in the late 1980s. [3] Returning to Perth in 1993, she left the sports department for general reporting, and progressed to become the Perth Nine News weeknight presenter alongside Peter Holland. In June 2003, Sonia Vinci replaced Holland to form Australia's first permanent all-female weekday evening news presenting team. [4]

In 2011, she resigned from Nine News [5] and, shortly after, joined the Western Australian Premier, Colin Barnett's office as the Director of Government Media. [6] She moved to the role of strategic communications director in January 2015. [1]

Marshall attracted considerable criticism following the spectacular defeat of the Barnett government in the March 2017 WA state election. The Australian reported that "Marshall was a controversial figure in Barnett's office. While not quite achieving Peta Credlin-level controversy, she was accused in parliament of being foul-mouthed and a bully." [7] [8]

In April 2017, former WA Police major crime boss, Inspector Jack Lee, while giving evidence in a multimillion-dollar defamation case being brought by barrister Lloyd Rayney, said Marshall had, during his investigation of Corryn Rayney's murder, attempted to pressure him, and threatened to report him to the Corruption and Crime Commission if he did not "pursue" Lloyd Rayney over the death of his wife. Marshall led Dentsu Aegis Network content agency The Story Lab as its Head of Creative and Partnerships when it launched in Perth in April 2017. [10] In 2018, Marshall joined the marketing firm Marketforce, leading its content creation division, Flare. [11] [12] Flare won a Perth Advertising and Design Club Award in 2019. [2] In December 2020, Marshall was appointed Managing Director of Marketforce. [12]

Personal life

Marshall is the daughter of former footballer, tennis player, commentator and Liberal Party of Australia politician Arthur Marshall. She has two children with Luke Morfesse, a former journalist and current general manager of media and communications for the Fremantle Football Club. [5]

Liza Mary Harvey is an Australian politician who was the Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 2008 to 2021, representing the seat of Scarborough. She was a minister in the government of Colin Barnett, and in 2016 was appointed deputy premier, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She became leader of the opposition after being elected unopposed to replace Mike Nahan as state Liberal leader on 13 June 2019. On 22 November 2020, she resigned as Liberal leader and was replaced by Zak Kirkup. She lost her seat at the 2021 election.

Corryn Veronica Ann Rayney, née Da Silva, migrated to Australia with her Indian family in 1973 as refugees from Idi Amin's Uganda. Her death occurred on or about 7 August 2007, her body being discovered a week later in a clandestine grave in Kings Park, Perth, with no clearly established cause of death. Her husband Lloyd Rayney, a prominent barrister specialising in criminal prosecution, was charged with her murder, but found not guilty after a trial before a judge only. The acquittal was unanimously upheld by a court of appeal in August 2013. The state's police commissioner and attorney general declined to acknowledge documented procedural mistakes, and refused to instigate a fresh search for the killers, leading to calls for a federal investigation into the matter.

The 2017 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 11 March 2017 to elect members to the Parliament of Western Australia, including all 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 36 seats in the Legislative Council. The eight-and-a-half-year two-term incumbent Liberal–WA National government, led by Premier Colin Barnett, was defeated in a landslide by the Labor opposition, led by Opposition Leader Mark McGowan.

At various times, he served as Minister for Transport, Minister for Finance and Minister for Agriculture and Food in the ministry of Premier Colin Barnett from 2014 to 2016. Following the Liberals' defeat at the 2017 state election, Nalder served in a number of shadow portfolios in the shadow ministries of Mike Nahan and Liza Harvey until resigning from the frontbench on 8 December 2020, following his announcement of retirement from politics at the next election. He was succeeded in his seat of Bateman by Labor's Kim Giddens on 13 March 2021.

The Perth Freight Link was a proposed $1.9 billion project in Perth, Western Australia to improve the road freight link between Kewdale and Fremantle Harbour. The project was announced by the state government in May 2014, but was cancelled following a change of government at the March 2017 state election.

Lloyd Patrick Rayney is a former Western Australian barrister and Crown prosecutor who came to prominence when he was charged and acquitted in 2012 of the murder or manslaughter of his wife Corryn Rayney. In 2017, he succeeded in a defamation action against the State of Western Australia over police behaviour and was awarded a record sum of $A2.62 million. In a long-running action, the WA Legal Professional Complaints Committee and the State Administrative Tribunal had his practising certificate cancelled for "professional misconduct" and "knowingly giving false evidence".
