Doi Tung Coffee is a varietal of Coffea arabica grown in northern Thailand.

Coffea arabica, also known as the Arabian coffee, "coffee shrub of Arabia", "mountain coffee", or "arabica coffee", is a species of Coffea. It is believed to be the first species of coffee to be cultivated, and is the dominant cultivar, representing some 60% of global production. Coffee produced from the robusta bean makes up most of the remaining coffee production.

History

The Doi Tung varietal of coffee emerged from Thai opium replacement efforts starting in the late 1980s. The mountainous region around Mount Doi Tung in northern Thailand was a very poor, struggling region in which many of the local people made their living by growing opium to sell to Burmese traders. [1] Princess Srinagarindra took an interest in the region, and a development project was set up under which local residents were given land-use titles and encouraged to grow coffee and macadamia nuts. [2] A chain of coffee shops using the Doi Tung name was opened to market Doi Tung coffee to Thais. [3] As production increased, Doi Tung coffee began to be marketed for export. Starting 1 December 2018, it began to be served on Japan Airlines flights, [4] and plans are being made to enter the United States market. [3]

Opium replacement or opium substitution refers to the process of substituting opium poppy cash crops with non-narcotic alternatives.

Srinagarindra mother of King Bhumibol

Princess Srinagarindra née Sangwan Talapat was a member of the Thai Royal Family. She was also a member of the House of Mahidol, which is descended from the Chakri Dynasty, and was originated by Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla, son of King Chulalongkorn. She was the mother of Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Princess of Naradhiwas, King Ananda Mahidol, and King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Characteristics and processing

The Doi Tung varietal is a cross of several hybrids: Catimor, Caturra, and Catuai. It is grown within the Nang Non mountain range in Chiang Rai Province, at an elevation of approximately 800-1200 meters. It is described as having "a unique well-balanced taste with fruity sweet frangrance/overtones, generous acidity without sharpness, and a medium body." [5] The coffee beans are processed and roasted locally in the growing region, rather than being sold green for processing elsewhere. [6]

Protected Geographic Indication (PGI)

The Thai government granted a geographical indication to Doi Tung coffee in 2006. [4] The government further applied for PGI status with the European Union in May 2010, which was granted, making Doi Tung coffee the second Thai product (after 'Hom Mali' rice) to hold such status in the EU. [7]

Nok Air is a low-cost airline in Thailand operating mostly domestic services out of Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport. Thai Airways owns the second-largest stake in the airline.

One-Two-GO Airlines

One Two Go Airlines Co. Ltd was a low-cost airline based in Don Mueang, Bangkok, Thailand. Its main base was Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok. Always owned and managed by Orient Thai Airlines and owned by CEO Udom Tantiprasongchai and his wife Nina Tantriprasongchai, the One-Two-GO brand was retired in July 2010, and the aircraft re-branded as Orient Thai Airlines. On October 9, 2018, the airline ceased all operations.

Phuket Air is an airline based in Bangkok, Thailand. The airline currently specialises in leasing its fleet of Boeing 747 and 737 aircraft on an ACMI as well as wet lease basis to airlines worldwide needing extra passenger capacity. Other services provided include international charter services, ad hoc wet leasing services, religious pilgrimage charters (Hajj/Umrah) and dry lease services. Saudi Arabian Airlines is a major long term client of Phuket Air. In the past, the airline provided scheduled domestic and international air services. Its main base is at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, with a hub at Phuket International Airport, Phuket. Rice is the country's most important crop, with some 60 percent of Thailand's 13 million farmers growing it on fully half of Thailand's cultivated land. Daen Lao Range

The Daen Lao Range is a mountain range of the Shan Hills in eastern Burma and northern Thailand. Most of the range is in Shan State, with its northern limit close to the border with China, and runs southwards across the Thai border, at the northern end of Thailand.

The Royal Project Foundation is a Thai non-profit organisation based in north Thailand. It was founded by King Bhumibol Adulyadej as an umbrella organization for his charitable initiatives and research. The focus of the foundation is to improve the quality of life of hill tribes. Ancillary goals are to reduce opium-growing and to revive forests and water resources. The Royal Project Foundation is considered one of the first and most successful projects for opium production elimination. It was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1988.

Thai Vietjet Air


Thai Vietjet Air is a Thai low-cost airline and an associate company of Vietnamese airline VietJet Air. Thai VietJet Air received its Air Operator's Certificate in November 2014. The carrier commenced operations on 29 March 2015 from its hub in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Phuket International Airport. The airline plans to launch services to Udon Thani later.

Coffee production in Thailand

Thailand is one of the top coffee producers in the world as of 2014. The country is ranked third among the coffee producing countries of Asia with robusta coffee accounting for 99 percent of its production.
