Dominic Gerard Christian is a Councilman of the City of London Corporation [1] where he represents the Ward of Lime Street. He is Global Chairman of Aon Reinsurance Solutions and a member of Aon's Global Executive. [2] He is also the Deputy Chairman of Lloyd's of London. [3] Christian has remained active in promoting awareness of climate change and emerging risks, acting as a Board Advisor at Save Money Cut Carbon (2021 to Present) [4] as well as Chair of ClimateWise from 2018 to 2022. Christian has also been a non-Executive Chairman at ZPE Limited since February 2023.
Christian was educated at St Joseph's College, Ipswich and the University of East Anglia (BA History, 1982). [5] He was awarded an honorary doctorate in civil law from the University of East Anglia in 2015. [6]
Christian started his reinsurance career in 1984 with Lloyd's brokers JK Buckenham in 1984 as International Facultative Broker. [7] He joined Lloyd's broker Greig Fester in 1989 as International Reinsurance Treaty Broker specialising in Retrocession. He was appointed as Director, Grieg Fester Ltd, in 1995. When Greig Fester became part of Benfield Group in May 1997, he continued to lead the Retrocession Broking activities of the Group.
Christian was appointed as Benfield Group International CEO and Benfield Ltd. CEO in 2005. [8] In 2004 he was appointed as Board Director of Benfield Plc, a former constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. The company became part of Aon Corporation, trading as Aon Benfield, in 2008. He has held posts at Aon Benfield including International CEO, co-CEO and Executive Chairman, International and CEO of Aon UK Ltd. [9]
He was instrumental in founding the Dive In Festival in 2015, alongside Dame Inga Beale, the former CEO of Lloyd’s. The festival, which promotes diversity and inclusion across the insurance industry, has since expanded to over 30 countries, attracting thousands of attendees globally. [10]
As of October 2023, he is the Global Chairman of Aon Reinsurance Solutions. He is a member of Aon's Global Executive Committee. [11]
Under Christian's tenure, Aon implemented several initiatives focused on improving the representation of ethnic minorities within the organisation. Among these was the Aon Insights programme, developed in collaboration with Mary Alade, Aon’s Chief Strategy Officer. [12] The programme was designed to provide individuals from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds with exposure to the insurance sector. [13] Following its implementation, Aon introduced the BAME Future Leaders initiative, which created a direct pathway into the company’s graduate programme for candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. [14]
Christian has also established eight internal diversity networks at Aon, covering areas such as multiculturalism, gender, LGBTQ+, social mobility, and support for parents and carers. [15]
He has been consistently recognised by the INvolve global network and consultancy, appearing on the EMpower Top 20 Advocate Executive Role Models list for several years. [16]
As Chair of ClimateWise, Christian has worked to align the insurance industry with the challenges posed by climate change. [17] In this role, he has collaborated with member organisations to address the climate risk protection gap and encouraged greater industry engagement in sustainable risk management practices. [18]
He has highlighted the potential for the insurance sector to support climate resilience through improved risk modelling, the use of insurance-linked securities (ILS), and partnerships with governments and regulators. [19]
