Donna Johnson is an American politician. In 2021,she became the first Black woman elected mayor of Libertyville,Illinois. [1]
Johnson is the daughter of Carol and Donald Tyler Johnson. [2] Her mother was the Chair of the Civil Service Commission and Human Relations Commission in Evanston,Illinois;her father graduated from the University of Illinois Grainger College of Engineering but according to Johnson,was unable to find work as a chemical engineer due to segregation. [2] Her father worked for the Chicago Fire Department,eventually becoming a battalion chief. [2]
Johnson moved with her family from Evanston to Libertyville in 1979. [3] [4] She completed a BA in political science from Michigan State University [5] and a JD degree. [6]
Johnson worked as prosecutor in Cook County and Lake County before taking a position at Allstate as a corporate attorney. [2] [7] [8] She served for nine years on the Libertyville Plan Commission board of appeals before running for office,and worked to develop the business presence in downtown Libertyville. [3] [7] In 2007,she was elected to the Libertyville Board of Trustees. [7] Her work as a trustee included serving as the chair of the Streets Committee. [8] In 2018,while serving as a member of the Board of Trustees,she advocated for a pay increase for elected officials to help increase the number of qualified candidates for office. [9] As of 2020,Johnson was also serving as Chair of the Advocate Condell Medical Center Governing Board. [8] [4]
After serving 14 years as a trustee,she was recruited by the current mayor Terry Weppler and others to run for mayor. [3] [2] She ran unopposed and was elected mayor following the election on April 6,2021. [10] She was sworn in on May 4,2021. [2] [4] She is the first Black mayor in the city's 185-year history. Libertyville has a Black population of 1.3%,according to the United States Census Bureau,and she is the second woman and first person of color to serve as mayor. [3] [11]
After taking office,Johnson announced her priorities as including a balanced budget,the development of the downtown business district,and the promotion of small businesses. [12] During her tenure,a local cannabis sales tax was enacted for Libertyville, [13] and $170,000 was awarded to local businesses through the Libertyville High Five Grant program. [14] In March 2022,she announced the sale of the Libertyville indoor sports complex to the Canadian firm Canlan Sports for $3.13 million;the village had been trying to sell the complex for years due to high debt payments. Johnson is a member of the Proclaimer Ministry of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. [4] [8] She has two children. [5]
Libertyville is a village in Lake County,Illinois,United States,and a northern suburb of Chicago. It is located 5 miles (8 km) west of Lake Michigan along the Des Plaines River. The 2020 census population was 20,579. It is part of Libertyville Township,which includes the village,neighboring Green Oaks,and portions of Vernon Hills,Mundelein,unincorporated Waukegan and Lake Forest,and part of Knollwood CDP. Libertyville neighbors these communities as well as Gurnee to the north and Grayslake to the northwest. Libertyville is about 40 miles north of the Chicago Loop and is part of the United States Census Bureau's Chicago combined statistical area (CSA).
Mundelein is a village in Lake County,Illinois,United States and a northern suburb of Chicago. Per the 2020 census,the population was 31,560,making this the fourth largest town in Lake County. The village straddles Libertyville Township and Fremont Township,and borders Grayslake,Ivanhoe,Diamond Lake,and Libertyville. The village lies 33 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop.
Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun,also sometimes Moseley-Braun,is an American diplomat,politician,and lawyer who represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999. Prior to her Senate tenure,Moseley Braun was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1979 to 1988 and served as Cook County Recorder of Deeds from 1988 to 1992. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 after defeating Senator Alan J. Dixon in a Democratic primary. Moseley Braun served one term in the Senate and was defeated by Republican Peter Fitzgerald in 1998.

Mundelein High School(MHS) is a public four-year high school located in Mundelein,Illinois,a northern suburb of Chicago,Illinois,in the United States. The school serves the Village of Mundelein and parts of surrounding villages,include Vernon Hills,Grayslake,Hawthorn Woods,Round Lake,Wauconda and Libertyville. It was developed by Urban Investment and Development Co,and anchor stores Sears and Marshall Field &Company as part of New Century Town,a community with 5,000 condominiums and townhomes planned at the time. The mall features JCPenney,and Macy's,in addition to a Dave &Buster's and a 12-screen AMC Theatres.

She was elected to her first term as president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners,the executive branch of Cook County government,in November 2010,becoming the first woman elected to that position.
An election took place on February 24,2015,to elect the mayor of Chicago. The election was non-partisan and no candidate received a majority. A runoff election was held between the top two finishers on April 7,2015,and resulted in the reelection of incumbent mayor Rahm Emanuel. The elections were concurrent with the 2015 Chicago aldermanic elections.

King is an American politician and former member of Chicago City Council,who served as alderman from the 4th ward,which includes portions of the neighborhoods Bronzeville,Hyde Park,Kenwood,Oakland,and South Loop. King was appointed to the position by mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2016 as a replacement to the retiring William D. Burns. She won a special election in 2017 to serve out the rest term of the Burns' unexpired term,and was re-elected to a full term in 2019. On the council,she was a member and chair of the Progressive Reform Caucus. She forwent reelection to the city council in 2023 in order to make an unsuccessful run for mayor of Chicago in the 2023 Chicago mayoral election.

Before becoming mayor,Lightfoot worked in private legal practice as a partner at Mayer Brown and held various government positions in Chicago. She served as president of the Chicago Police Board and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. In 2019,Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election for Chicago mayor. She ran again in 2023 but failed to qualify for the runoff,becoming the city's first incumbent mayor to not be reelected since Jane Byrne in 1983.
Kambium Elijah "Kam" Buckner is an American politician and attorney who serves as a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives from the 26th district. The district,located entirely in Chicago,includes neighborhoods such as Bronzeville,Downtown,Gold Coast,and Hyde Park,among others. The election was officially nonpartisan,with winner Brandon Johnson being elected to a four-year term which began on May 15.
