Donovan Harry O'Grady (born 16 February 1993) is a South African-born Swiss rugby union player who plays at scrum-half, fly-half and fullback for Switzerland at national level and is regarded as a utility back. He currently plays his club rugby for CS Rugby 1863 and has done since 2019.

Career

Club career

Donovan O'Grady started playing club rugby in 2012 when he played for the Sharks Academy Touring team. He played for other South African teams Limpopo Blue Bulls, Tuks Rugby Club and ended his South African career playing for Naka Bulls. He ended up winning the Lucas Strachan Trophy for Naka before moving to National League 2 South side Bury St Edmunds marking his first club outside of South Africa.

For the 2017–18 season, O'Grady joined German professional side, Heidelberger RK, his first professional rugby experience. He played for them during their European Rugby continental Shield play-offs. They lostthe Continental Shield Final 24–20 to Russian side Enisey-STM. [4]

In 2019, he joined English club CS Rugby 1863 in Chiswick where is still currently plays.

International Career

O'Grady began his international career with Switzerland playing non-test rugby from 2016. During the 2017–18 Rugby Europe Trophy, he missed the opening game against the Switzerland and made his official test debut on debut at scrum-half in the second game against Moldova pon 25 November 2017 during their 22–20 away win at Complexul Sportiv Raional in Orhei, Moldova. He made three caps during the tournament only missing the last game against Poland after suffering from a broken arm during the Czech Republic game, a game he played at fullback for the first time at international level. Switzerland finished in fourth place out of the six teams winning two of five games. During the competition, O'Grady was selected for a couple of friendly test matches against Côte d'Ivoire where he made his first international appearance at fly-half.

O'Grady competed in every game of the 2018–19 Rugby Europe Trophy where the Swiss won three of the five matches played with O'Grady scoring 6 points; his first international points in test rugby. He only competed in one match during the 2019–20 Rugby Europe Trophy, their 40–9 away win over Lithuania on 16 November 2019 where he also scored his first international try. Only two games were played by Switzerland during the 2019–20 season due to the cancellation of the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also made his debut for Switzerland Sevens during the 2018 Rugby Europe Sevens Conference 2 in Estonia eventually finishing second place behind Saint Petersburg and getting promoted to Conference 1 for the following year. For the 2019 Rugby Europe Sevens Conference in Serbia, he assisted Switzerland in their run to a fourth place finish in the competition.
