Doraiswami Ramkrishna is the Harry Creighton Peffer Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University since 1994. [1]

Education and early career

Ramkrishna earned his B. (Chem) Eng. Degree from the University Department of Chemical Technology of University of Mumbai in 1960, and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1965 with doctoral advisor Arnold Fredrickson. Following his PhD, he was an Assistant Professor for two years at Minnesota before returning to the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur where he served on the faculty for nearly seven years. He returned to the United States in 1974 as a Visiting Associate Professor in 1974, thereafter as a visiting professor at Minnesota in 1975 before joining Purdue University as a Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1976.

Research

Professor Ramkrishna's research interests lie in the application of mathematics to chemical and biochemical reaction engineering. He has published nearly 280 papers and three books, one entitled Linear Operator Methods in Chemical Engineering (Prentice-Hall) coauthored with Neal Amundson, another on Population Balances. Theory and Applications to Particulate Systems in Engineering and Science (Academic Press), and the third, Cybernetic Modeling for Bioreaction Engineering, Cambridge University Press. He has directed approximately 45 doctoral students and numerous post-doctoral associates, and placed several students in academia.

Awards and professorships

Ramkrishna has held a number of Distinguished Visiting Professorships in various universities such as Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (1982: University Grants Commission Visiting Professor), Bombay University (1983: G. P. Kane Visiting Professor, 1994: Dow-Sharma Distinguished Fellow, 2010: M.M. Sharma Distinguished Professor), University of Minnesota (1988: George T. Piercy Distinguished Professor), University of Notre Dame (1994: Melchor Visiting Professor).

In 2009, Professor Ramkrishna was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His election citation stated:

“For creation of new model concepts and solutions that improved the engineering of biological and particulate processes.,”

He won the AIChE Alpha Chi Sigma Award in 1987, the Bombay University Distinguished Alumnus (UDCT Diamond) Award in 1994, was elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 1996, the AIChE Wilhelm Award in 1998, the Senior Humboldt Prize in 2001, the AIChE Thomas Baron Award in 2004, and the AiChE William H. Walker Award in 2021, awarded Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004, and the Purdue Research Excellence Award in 2005. [3] [4] [5]

Cato T. Laurencin FREng SLMH is an American engineer, physician, scientist, innovator and a University Professor of the University of Connecticut.

Edward L. Cussler is an American chemical engineer and professor in the department of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota. He is internationally known for his work in fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, and gas separations, especially in the areas of membranes and gas sorption. Cussler is an author of more than 250 academic papers, dozens of patents, and five books including the acclaimed text: “Diffusion”. He has served as director, vice president and president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and he presented the AIChE Institute Lecture in 2014. Cussler and his wife Betsy, a former teacher at Edina High School, are long-time residents of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Neal Russell Amundson was an American chemical engineer and applied mathematician. He was the chair of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota for over 25 years. Later, he was the Cullen Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Houston. Amundson was considered one of the most prominent chemical engineering educators and researchers in the United States. The Chemical Engineering and Materials Science building at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities bears his name.

Nicholas (Nikolaos) A. Peppas is a chemical and biomedical engineer whose leadership in biomaterials science and engineering, drug delivery, bionanotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, chemical and polymer engineering has provided seminal foundations based on the physics and mathematical theories of nanoscale, macromolecular processes and drug/protein transport and has led to numerous biomedical products or devices.

Leslie Gary Leal is the Warren & Katharine Schlinger Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is known for his research work in the dynamics of complex fluids.

Dr. Jerry Y.S. Lin is a Regents' Professor of Chemical Engineering in School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, US. He publishes papers under the names “Y.S. Lin” or "Jerry Y.S. Lin". From 2006 to 2009, he served as the Chemical Engineering Department Chair at Arizona State University, and now directs the Membrane and Energy Laboratory at ASU.

Elmer L. Gaden Jr. has been described as "the father of biochemical engineering". A graduate of Columbia University, he wrote a dissertation that quantified the amount of oxygen necessary to fuel the fermentation process used to produce penicillin. Gaden established Columbia's program in biochemical engineering. He remained at Columbia for 26 years as a teacher, researcher, and department chair, before becoming dean of the college of engineering, mathematics, and business administration at the University of Vermont in 1974. In 1979, he joined the engineering faculty at the University of Virginia as the Wills Johnson Professor of Chemical Engineering. In 1994 he retired from Virginia, becoming Wills Johnson Professor Emeritus. He died in 2012.

Kristi S. Anseth is the Tisone Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, an Associate Professor of Surgery, and a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her main research interests are the design of synthetic biomaterials using hydrogels, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine.

Ashutosh Sharma is an Institute Chair Professor and C V Seshadri Chair Professor at the Department of chemical engineering of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is the founding Coordinator of DST Thematic Unit of Excellence on Soft Nanofabrication and Chairman of Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He is best known for his pioneering research work in the areas of colloids, thin film, interfaces, adhesion, patterning and in the fabrication and application of self-assembled nano-structures.

Ioannis George (Yannís) Kevrekidis is currently the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering within the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University. He holds secondary appointments in the Whiting School's Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Department of Urology.

Laxmangudi Krishnamurthy Doraiswamy (1927–2012) was an Indian-American chemical engineer, author and academic, known for his contributions in developing Organic synthesis engineering as a modern science discipline. Chemical Engineering journal of McGraw Hill listed him among the 10 most distinguished chemical engineers in the world in 1988. He was the author of nine texts in chemical engineering, including Organic Synthesis Engineering, a 2001 publication which is known to have introduced the topic as a definitive scientific stream and Heterogeneous reactions: Analysis, Examples, and Reactor Design, reportedly the first comprehensive text in chemical engineering.

Ganapati Dadasaheb Yadav is an Indian chemical engineer, inventor and academic, known for his research on nanomaterials, gas absorption with chemical reaction and phase transfer catalysis. He served as the vice chancellor of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai from 2009 until November 2019. He is currently the Emeritus Professor of Eminence at ICT Mumbai.

Francis "Frank" J. Doyle III is an American engineer and academic administrator. He is the dean of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the John A. and Elizabeth S. Armstrong Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Doyle is also affiliated with the Division of Sleep Medicine of Harvard Medical School. On December 15, 2022, it was announced that Doyle will serve as the 14th provost of Brown University starting in the 2023 academic year.

Arnold Gerhard Fredrickson was an American chemical engineer and professor in the department of chemical engineering and materials science (CEMS) at the University of Minnesota. He was known for his work in transport phenomena, bioengineering and population dynamics. Fredrickson was the author of over 100 scientific publications and advisor to over 50 graduate students. He was recognized for his contributions to chemical engineering with election as fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1997) and fellow and founding member of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers (1993).

Greg N. Stephanopoulos is an American chemical engineer and the Willard Henry Dow Professor in the department of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked at MIT, Caltech, and the University of Minnesota in the areas of biotechnology, bioinformatics, and metabolic engineering especially in the areas of bioprocessing for biochemical and biofuel production. Stephanopoulos is the author of over 400 scientific publications with more than 35,000 citations as of April 2018. In addition, Greg has supervised more than 70 graduate students and 50 post-docs whose research has led to more than 50 patents. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2005), a member of the National Academy of Engineering (2003), and received the ENI Prize on Renewable Energy 2011.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gilda Barabino</span>

Gilda A. Barabino is the president of the Olin College of Engineering, where she is also a professor of biomedical and chemical engineering. Previously, she served as the dean of The Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York, and as a professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and the CUNY School of Medicine. On March 4, 2021, she became the President-Elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
