Doris Davenport, sometimes styled as doris davenport (born 29 January 1949), [1] is a writer, educator, and literary and performance poet. [2] She wrote an essay featured in This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color entitled "The Pathology of Racism: A Conversation with Third World Wimmin." She also focuses her efforts on poetry and education.

Contents

Davenport identifies as African American, Appalachian, Feminist, and LGBTQ, which all heavily influence her writings. Today, she holds many workshops and poetry performances. [3]

Early life and education

Davenport was born in Gainesville, Georgia, and raised in Cornelia, Georgia. [4] She often mentions her life growing up in the Appalachian foothills and has written many poems published in the Appalachian Heritage. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English from Paine College. She earned a Master of Arts (MA) in English from the University at Buffalo. Her Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Literature was obtained from the University of Southern California. [5]

Feminism

In a 40 year old essay, "The Pathology of Racism: A Conversation with Third World Wimmin," she speaks of racism as a disease (which negatively affects white feminists). davenport projects a vision of wellness among all feminists, worldwide, and states that there are many other issues to concentrate on. In more recent essays, davenport focuses on the poetry of African American wimmin, most recently, Brenda Marie Osbey of New Orleans, LA.

Sexual Identities

One of her influences as a writer is through her multiple identities. For instance, as a self-identified lesbian, Davenport incorporates poetry from her life that revolves around her prioritizing women. Her self-published collection of poems it's like this is her first published book of poetry, immersed in a spiritual-lesbian worldview.

Culture

davenport speaks often of her heritage and in many of her works, she expresses the joy and richness that comes along with being African American. Her themes follow her communities, the effects of modern feminism on her community, and the personal successes she's faced through her lifetime. Growing up in the south, davenport heavily incorporates her upbringing to reflect her childhood. Many of her works express her life living in the Appalachian Foothills as she has close ties to the area.

Career

Today, davenport defines herself (pronouns: person, per) as an Independent Poet-Scholar,Teacher & Writer. "Per" also has extensive teaching experience. Most recently, Dr. Davenport was associate professor of English at Albany State University and later, at Stillman College. To date, she has published twelve books of poetry and continues to give performances. She currently resides in Northeast Georgia, on Traditional Cherokee Homelands. [6]

Womyn is one of several alternative political spellings of the English word women, used by some feminists. There are other spellings, including womban or womon (singular), and wombyn or wimmin (plural). Some writers who use such alternative spellings, avoiding the suffix "-man" or "-men", see them as an expression of female independence and a repudiation of traditions that define women by reference to a male norm. Recently, the term womxn has been used by intersectional feminists to indicate the same ideas while foregrounding or more explicitly including transgender women and women of color.

Hilda Doolittle was an American modernist poet, novelist, and memoirist who wrote under the name H.D. throughout her life. Her career began in 1911 after she moved to London and co-founded the avant-garde Imagist group of poets with American expatriate poet and critic Ezra Pound. During this early period, her minimalist free verse poems depicting Classical motifs drew international attention. Eventually distancing herself from the Imagist movement, she experimented with a wider variety of forms, including fiction, memoir, and verse drama. Reflecting the trauma she experienced in London during the Blitz, H.D.'s poetic style from World War II until her death pivoted towards complex long poems on esoteric and pacifist themes.

Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa was an American scholar of Chicana feminism, cultural theory, and queer theory. She loosely based her best-known book, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987), on her life growing up on the Mexico–Texas border and incorporated her lifelong experiences of social and cultural marginalization into her work. She also developed theories about the marginal, in-between, and mixed cultures that develop along borders, including on the concepts of Nepantla, Coyoxaulqui imperative, new tribalism, and spiritual activism. Her other notable publications include This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (1981), co-edited with Cherríe Moraga.

Myung Mi Kim is a Korean American poet noted for her postmodern writings. Kim and her family immigrated to the United States when she was nine years old. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa and lectured for some years on creative writing at the San Francisco State University. She is currently Professor of English at the University at Buffalo.

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches is a collection of essential essays and speeches written by Audre Lorde, a writer who focuses on the particulars of her identity: Black woman, lesbian, poet, activist, cancer survivor, mother, and feminist. This collection, now considered a classic volume of Lorde's most influential works of non-fiction prose, has had a groundbreaking impact in the development of contemporary feminist theories. In fifteen essays and speeches dating from 1976 to 1984, Lorde explores the complexities of intersectional identity, while explicitly drawing from her personal experiences of oppression to include sexism, heterosexism, racism, homophobia, classism, and ageism. The book examines a broad range of topics, including love, self-love, war, imperialism, police brutality, coalition building, violence against women, Black feminism, and movements towards equality that recognize and embrace differences as a vehicle for change. Rose Romano is an Italian-American poet, novelist, essayist, and editor. She founded and edited the journal la bella figura, which promoted the work of Italian-Americans. After a brief but successful run, she folded the journal when she decided to live in Italy. Before leaving the United States, she edited an anthology of poems that had appeared in the journal. She is the author of several novels and volumes of poetry, and her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.

Donna Kate Rushin, popularly known as Kate Rushin, is a Black lesbian poet. Rushin's prefatory poem, "The Bridge Poem", to the 1981 collection This Bridge Called My Back is considered iconic. She currently lives in Connecticut.

Carol Braun Pasternack was a professor of medieval English literature and language at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) from 1988 to 2013. She chaired the Medieval Studies department, and was also Dean of Summer Sessions at UCSB in 2011–2013.

Bessie Woodson Yancey was an African American poet, teacher, and activist, whose only published poetry collection, 1939's Echoes from the Hills, was "perhaps the earliest example of Affrilachian children's literature."

Liselott Margarete "Lisa" Kahn was a German-American poet and scholar of psychology and German studies. She studied at the University of Heidelberg, where she obtained a PhD in psychology in 1953. She married the German-American scholar Robert L. Kahn and emigrated to the United States, where she was a teacher at The Kinkaid School from 1964 to 1968 and professor of German at Texas Southern University from 1968 to 1990, serving as head of the foreign language department from 1988.

Thadious M. Davis is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. She is best known for her work on African American and Southern literature.

Mary Doyle Curran was an American poet, novelist, and teacher. Her work, described by poet Anne Halley as being "haunted" by issues of gender, ethnicity, and class, included many poems and a novel dealing with Irish-American life.
