Doris Wagner is an American biologist who is the Robert I. Williams Term Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research looks to better understand the structure-function relationships of plant cells. She established the Epigenomics of Plants International Consortium. Wagner is a Fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists.
Wagner was an undergraduate student at the Technical University of Munich. [1] She started a graduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, [2] where she studied structure-function properties of phytochrome B. [1] [3] After earning her doctorate, Wagner joined California Institute of Technology as a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation research fellow. [4]
Wagner is interested in how the genomes within chromatin are altered in response to environmental signals. She has focused on ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling and shown that chromatin remodelling regulates many distinct processes. [1] In 2010, she founded the Epigenomics of Plants International Consortium (EPIC). [5]
Wagner also investigates the fundamental mechanisms that underpin reproductive development of Arabidopsis thaliana . This includes how the helix-turn-helix transcription factor LEAFY (LFY) direct the formation of primordium and onset of reproduction. To investigate LFY, Wagner uses global expression and binding studies. Wagner believes that LFY gets hold of particular parts of the chromatin bundle, loosens the structure and recruits new proteins. This eventually permits genes to be transcribed into RNA. [6]
In 2019, Wagner was made Fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists. [7] She is the editor-in-chief of the journal Current Opinion in Plant Biology . [8]
In biology, the epigenome of an organism is the collection of chemical changes to its DNA and histone proteins that affects when, where, and how the DNA is expressed; these changes can be passed down to an organism's offspring via transgenerational stranded epigenetic inheritance. Changes to the epigenome can result in changes to the structure of chromatin and changes to the function of the genome.
The ABC model of flower development is a scientific model of the process by which flowering plants produce a pattern of gene expression in meristems that leads to the appearance of an organ oriented towards sexual reproduction, a flower. There are three physiological developments that must occur in order for this to take place: firstly, the plant must pass from sexual immaturity into a sexually mature state ; secondly, the transformation of the apical meristem's function from a vegetative meristem into a floral meristem or inflorescence; and finally the growth of the flower's individual organs. The latter phase has been modelled using the ABC model, which aims to describe the biological basis of the process from the perspective of molecular and developmental genetics.

Beronda Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and researcher. In 2022, she moved to Grinnell College as professor of biology and vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Prior to Grinnell, Montgomery served as Michigan State University Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. She was also a member of the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory. Her research group investigates how photosynthetic organisms adapt to changes in their environment. Together with Tanisha Williams and other members of the Black Botanists Week organizing committee, Montgomery co-founded and co-organizes Black Botanists Week.
