Dorothy Chang (born 1970) is an American-born composer and a professor of music at the University of British Columbia. [1]

Early life and education

Chang was born in Winfield, Illinois. [2] Her parents' families had fled to Taiwan from China during the Chinese Civil War, before immigrating to the United States. [3] She graduated from the University of Michigan and Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2000 with degrees in composition. [4] She married Canadian flautist Paolo Bortolussi, and the pair moved to British Columbia.

Career

In 2003, Chang joined the music faculty at the University of British Columbia.

Chang composed a number of works for solo flute, including "Mirage II" and "Wrath". [5]

In 2007, Chang was the composer-in-residence of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. [6] Her work "Strange Air" was performed at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in 2008. [7]

Chang was one of several Canadian composers commissioned by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017 to create the orchestra and dance piece True North: Symphonic Ballet , to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. [8] Chang composed the fourth movement, "Northern Star". [9] The complete work was performed at Calgary's True North Festival, and "Northern Star" was later performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and at the Orpheum in Vancouver. [10]

Chang wrote the first concerto for the combination of piano, erhu, and orchestra ever written, Gateways, in 2017–18. The work was commissioned for PEP (Piano and Erhu Project) by the Henan-Canada Friendship Association, Philharmonia Northwest, and PEP. The world premiere of the chamber orchestra version of Gateways was given by PEP and members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Vancouver in April 2018; the world premiere of the full orchestral version of Gateways was given by PEP and Philharmonia Northwest in Seattle in March 2019. Jean Coulthard, was a Canadian composer and music educator. She was one of a trio of women composers who dominated Western Canadian music in the twentieth century: Coulthard, Barbara Pentland, and Violet Archer. All three died within weeks of each other in 2000. Her works might be loosely termed "prematurely neo-Romantic", as the orthodox serialists who dominated academic musical life in North America during the 1950s and 1960s had little use for her.

Alexina Diane Louie, is a Canadian composer of contemporary art music. She has composed for various instrumental and vocal combinations in a variety of genres. She has fulfilled a number of commissions, and her works, which have been performed internationally, have earned her a number of awards, including the Order of Canada and two Juno Awards.

Chen Yi is a Chinese-American composer of contemporary classical music and violinist. She was the first Chinese woman to receive a Master of Arts (M.A.) in music composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Chen was a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition Si Ji, and has received awards from the Koussevistky Music Foundation and American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2010, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from The New School and in 2012, she was awarded the Brock Commission from the American Choral Directors Association. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2019.

Lorna McGhee is a Scottish flutist and teacher, currently serving as Principal Flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2012. In addition, she is an Artist Lecturer in Flute at Carnegie Mellon University. Past positions include co-principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and associate professor of flute at the University of British Columbia. She is currently a member of a flute, viola, and harp ensemble, 'Trio Verlaine' with her husband, violist David Harding and harpist Heidi Krutzen. McGhee is known for her "luscious tone colors and dynamics."

Oscar Ravina, born in Warsaw, Poland, was a violinist, violin teacher and concertmaster based in New York, who has had a prolific career as a performer as well as being a current professor emeritus at Montclair State University, where a talent grant in his name is regularly given to outstanding full-time freshmen studying string instruments.

Allan Rae is a Canadian composer, conductor, and trumpeter based in Calgary, Alberta. An associate and former board member of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers, he is particularly known for his works for the theatre which include several musicals and operas as well as incidental music. He has been commissioned to write music for productions mounted by the National Arts Centre, the Shaw Festival, and the Stratford Festival, as well as Theatre Passe Muraille, Vancouver Playhouse, Theatre Calgary, and the Globe Theatre, Regina. Between 1985 and 2000 he was composer-in-residence at Alberta Theatre Projects.

Steven Gellman is a Canadian composer and pianist. He has been commissioned to write works for the Besançon International Music Festival, the CBC Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic, McGill University, Musica Camerata, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Opera Lyra, the Pierrot Ensemble, the Stratford Festival, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra among others. The Percussion Concerto No. 2 is a concerto for solo percussion and orchestra by the Scottish composer James MacMillan. The work was jointly commissioned by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the São Paulo State Symphony. It was first performed on November 7, 2014 at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, the Netherlands, by percussionist Colin Currie and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under conductor James Gaffigan. The composition is MacMillan's second percussion concerto after 1992's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel.

True North: Symphonic Ballet is a pièce d'occasion commissioned by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.

Vincent Ho is a Canadian composer. Both his Arctic Symphony and The Shaman: Concerto for Percussion & Orchestra were nominated for Juno Awards.
