Dorothy Joan Harris (born February 14, 1931) is a Japanese-born Canadian writer living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She mainly writes children's books. [1]
The daughter of Hubert and Alice Langley, she was born Dorothy Joan Langley in Kobe and came with her family to St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1938. She received a degree in modern languages from the University of Toronto in 1952 and went on to teach elementary school in France and Japan. She returned to Toronto in 1954 and married Alan Harris in 1955; the couple had two children. From 1955 to 1961, Harris was an editor for Copp Clark Publishers. From 1977 to 1996, she was a public library assistant. [1] [2] [3]
She contributed to the 1999 anthology Too Young to Fight: Memories from our Youth During World War, which received the BolognaRagazzi Award at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. Her 2004 book A very unusual dog was nominated for a Chocolate Lily Award. [2]
A picture book combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, most often aimed at young children. With the narrative told primarily through text, they are distinct from comics, which do so primarily through sequential images.

The Secret River is a children's fantasy novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of The Yearling. Published in 1955, The Secret River received a Newbery Honor Award. The first edition, illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Leonard Weisgard, was issued after Rawlings' death. The book was revised and reissued in 2009 with illustrations by Caldecott Medalists Leo and Diane Dillon. The new edition received an international children's book design award in 2012. The Secret River is the only book Rawlings wrote specifically for children. The story of young Calpurnia, who goes on a quest to find a magical river and catch fish for her starving family and friends, it has two themes common in Rawlings' writing, the magic of childhood and the struggle of people to survive in a harsh environment.
Polar the Titanic Bear is a children's book written by Margaretta "Daisy" Corning Spedden and released in 1994. Spedden was an American heiress who survived the sinking of the Titanic, and her account of her family's trip and the eventual disaster, written as a tale to amuse her seven-year-old son, was published about 45 years after her death. The story is told from the point of view of a Teddy Bear.

The story is aimed towards children in grades 1–3 to teach them valuable skills, from counting to the importance of critical thinking.Cybèle's book received the 2011 Governor General's Awards. Illustrations in the book were drawn with pen and ink, making the pictures very intricate as well as black and white.

Kim LaFave is a Canadian children's book illustrator and artist. LaFave started his illustration career in media before his first children's drawings appeared in the 1981 book The Mare's Egg. From the 1980s to 2000s, his drawings appeared in over 40 children's books. As an artist, LaFave painted landscapes, boats and snow from the 2000s to 2020s. He also was a member of Eleven Equal Artists during the 2010s.
