Dotmatics is an R&D scientific software company used by scientists in the R&D process that help them be more efficient in their efforts to innovate. Founded in 2005, the company's primary office is in Boston with 14 offices around the globe. [1] In March 2021, Insightful Science acquired Dotmatics. [2] In April 2022, the two companies consolidated under the Dotmatics brand with Insightful Science CEO Thomas Swalla leading the new Dotmatics. [3] Dotmatics' software is used by 2 million scientists and researchers and 10,000 customers. [4]

Dotmatics offers a cloud-based data management platform to support the R&D process and a series of software applications used by scientists that include GraphPad Prism, SnapGene, Geneious Prime, Geneious Biologics, Lab Archives, OMIQ, Protein Metrics, nQuery, Cytapex Bioinformatics, De Novo, SoftGenetics [5] , and M-Star [6] . [7]

In October 2023, Dotmatics released a multimodal drug discovery platform named Luma. Luma is a low-code SaaS platform that aggregates relevant data across instruments and software into clean data structures for AI and ML-based analysis. [4]

Dotmatics is backed by Insight Partners, a venture capital and private equity firm. [8]

History

Dotmatics' origins trace back to Merck Sharp and Dohme, a multinational pharmaceutical company, where, in the early 2000s, Merck staff developed what later became Dotmatics' browser and gateway software. Dotmatics Limited was founded in 2005 as a spin-out [9] when Merck closed the site. The company was established with the intent to address the information needs of scientists in the biotech/pharma space. [6]

Dotmatics develops web-based tools for querying, browsing, managing, and sharing scientific data and documents. [23]

KNIME, the Konstanz Information Miner, is a free and open-source data analytics, reporting and integration platform. KNIME integrates various components for machine learning and data mining through its modular data pipelining "Building Blocks of Analytics" concept. A graphical user interface and use of JDBC allows assembly of nodes blending different data sources, including preprocessing, for modeling, data analysis and visualization without, or with only minimal, programming.

LabKey Server is a software suite available for scientists to integrate, analyze, and share biomedical research data. The platform provides a secure data repository that allows web-based querying, reporting, and collaborating across a range of data sources. Specific scientific applications and workflows can be added on top of the basic platform and leverage a data processing pipeline.

The BioMart project originated at the European Bioinformatics Institute as a data management solution for the Human Genome Project. ChemWindow is a chemical structure drawing molecule editor and publishing program now published by John Wiley & Sons as of 2020, originally developed by Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. The main feature of the program is the ability to design data workflows using a graphical user interface. It is an example of visual and dataflow programming and has use in a variety of settings, such as cheminformatics and QSAR, Next Generation Sequencing, image analysis, and text analytics. It is not an 'object oriented' programming language.

A bioinformatics workflow management system is a specialized form of workflow management system designed specifically to compose and execute a series of computational or data manipulation steps, or a workflow, that relate to bioinformatics.
