Douglas H. Dority was president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW),one of North America's largest labor unions. [1] [2]
Dority was born on December 9,1938 in Marion,Virginia.
Dority's involvement with the union began in the 1960s,when he organized the grocery store where he worked in Lynchburg,Virginia. [3]
Dority worked in various roles for the UFCW (and before 1979,the Retail Clerks International Union) throughout the 1970s,1980s,and early 1990s. As a field organizer,Dority worked on extended campaigns in both the United States and Canada,and Quebec and southern Ontario in particular. [3]
Upon the retirement of William H. Wynn in 1994,Dority become UFCW international president. [3]
Dority intensified the UFCW's comprehensive campaign against Walmart,investing significant resources in the public relations campaign against the retailer,culminating in a "national day of action" in 2002,where UFCW and other unions held rallies in more than 100 communities throughout the United States. The action was fully backed by the AFL–CIO,where Dority served on the executive-council. [4]
From 2003–04,Dority led the UFCW through one of the largest work stoppages in its history,involving tens of thousands of grocery store workers in protracted strikes in California,Ohio,Kentucky and West Virginia. The action was focused on retaining healthcare benefits. [5]
Upon retiring from the UFCW in 2004,Dority became the president of America’s Agenda:Health Care for All, a labor-backed interest group dedicated to "winning guaranteed access to affordable,high quality healthcare for every American." [6]

Wake Up Wal-Mart was a campaign founded by United Food and Commercial Workers Union. It was based in Washington,D.C.,and was often critical of the business practices of Walmart,the world's largest retailer,and the largest private employer in the United States. The group claimed Walmart was offering its employees substandard wages and health care benefits,and called on the retailer to improve both. Wake Up Wal-Mart was founded April 5,2005,and maintained the web site WakeupWalMart.com,the centerpiece of the organization. The organization is now defunct. Its website is no longer active and the url wakeupwalmart.com now redirects to another UFCW-funded group,Making Change At Walmart.

"Bill" Wynn was the first president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW),and the last president of the Retail Clerks International Union (RCIU),after the latter merged with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America in 1979,to create the UFCW. He is best known for playing a leading role in completing the above merger,and,through that effort,making a pivotal contribution to the creation of the largest union affiliated to the AFL–CIO at the time. Wynn is also credited for instituting a fierce organizing culture at UFCW.

The 2019 Stop &Shop strike began on April 11,2019 when approximately 31,000 workers,represented by United Food and Commercial Workers,walked off the job and began picketing Stop &Shop locations across New England,United States,in the states of Massachusetts,Rhode Island,and Connecticut. The strike was in response to the company not agreeing after extensive negotiations to a contract which did not reduce employee pay and benefits. The strike ended eleven days later on April 21.
The 1985–1986 Hormel strike was a labor strike that involved approximately 1,500 workers of the Hormel meatpacking plant in Austin,Minnesota in the United States. The strike,beginning August 17,1985 and lasting until September 13 of the following year,is considered one of the longest strikes in Minnesota history and ended in failure for the striking workers.
The Alliance of Health Care Unions (Alliance) is a union federation of 21 local unions representing roughly 52,000 Kaiser Permanente (KP) employees. The Alliance is one of two union federations that are part of the largest and longest running Labor Management Partnership in the U.S. In 2021,more than 40,000 Alliance members were on the verge of the largest open-ended healthcare strike over concerns of short staffing and a two-tier wage system proposed by KP. On November 13,2021,the Alliance and KP reached an agreement that preserved leading wages and benefits and defeated the two-tier system.
As of June 2023,over 8,000 workers at over 331 Starbucks stores in at least 40 states in the United States have voted to unionize,primarily with Workers United. As of March 2023 none have yet enacted a collective bargaining agreement. This unionization effort started at a store in Buffalo,New York. About a third of Starbucks' Chilean workforce is already unionized,as well as 450 workers in New Zealand and one store in Canada. The longest Starbucks strike lasted 64 days,took place in Brookline,Massachusetts in September 2022 and resulted in the unionization of the employees at that location.
