Douglas Hamilton (4 March 1947 - 24 December 2012) was a Reuters foreign correspondent.

Douglas Matthew Hamilton was born in Fife, Scotland. A dual Canadian-British citizen, he was known for his writing on the fall of the Berlin Wall, [1] and regime changes in Czechoslovakia and Romania, the breakup and wars of succession of Yugoslavia, the rise and fall of dictators in Africa and the effects of the 2009 Israeli offensive [2] on Gaza. His assignments included reporting from the Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo wars, from behind the scenes at the EU and NATO and from the front lines of the Iraq, Lebanon, Libya and Syria conflicts.

In November 2012 Hamilton reported on the missile attacks on Tel Aviv, [3] [4] and the 2012 Tel Aviv bus bombing. [5]

He drowned while taking his daily swim in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Tel Aviv. [6] [7]

The Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, also known as Wafa al-Ahrar, followed a 2011 agreement between Israel and Hamas to release Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for 1,027 prisoners — almost all Palestinians and Arab-Israelis, although there were also a Ukrainian, a Jordanian and a Syrian. Of these, 280 had been sentenced to life in prison for planning and perpetrating various attacks against Israeli targets.

The 2012 Tel Aviv bus bombing was a mass-injury terror attack carried out on November 21, 2012, on a crowded passenger bus driving in the center of Tel Aviv's business district. The attack was carried out by an Israeli citizen of Arab descent, who remotely detonated an explosive device, which he had hid on the bus in advance. Twenty-eight civilians were injured in the attack, among them three who were injured seriously. The attack was carried out on the 8th and last day of Operation Pillar of Defense, only a few hours before the ceasefire was reached.

The 2012 Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip was a military operation carried out in the Gaza Strip by the Israel Defense Forces starting on 14 November 2012, following rocket attacks on Israeli territory launched from Gaza during the preceding days.
