In the 2002 regular election, Juneau-area voters approved the issue and sale of bonds totaling $15 million for improving the borough's harbors, utilities, and parks systems. [2] [3] $7.1 million was allocated for the harbors, including Douglas. [4]

Juneau-Douglas Yadaa.at Kalé High School is one of three high schools in Juneau, Alaska. It is one of two primary high schools for the Juneau School District, the other being Thunder Mountain High School. While Juneau-Douglas High School primarily serves students in Douglas and downtown Juneau, students in the district are free to attend either high school, and make their selection during their final months of eighth grade. Thunder Mountain High School is roughly the same size, but primarily serves students from the Mendenhall Valley. As of the 2021–2022 school year, Paula Casperson is the principal.

The view of the Mendenhall Glacier behind Auke Bay and Mount McGinnis towering over Auke Lake are some of the most popular photo opportunities in Juneau. The ferry terminal of the Alaska Marine Highway system is also located further out the road in Auke Bay at about 14 miles. The flamingo house on Auke Lake is a local attraction, known for its topical or weather-related formations of pink lawn flamingos. Whale watchings targeting curious humpbacks are available. Humpbacks in these areas are known to demonstrate special feeding methods, so-called "bubble-net feeding", and come very close to shores.
Kim Steven Elton is a journalist, commercial fisherman, government official and Democratic politician in the U.S. state of Alaska. Elton represented Juneau in the Alaska House of Representatives for two terms, from 1995 to 1999. In 1998, he was elected to the Alaska Senate, serving until his resignation in early 2009 to accept appointment as director of Alaska Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior by President Barack Obama. Prior to holding elected office, Elton was executive director of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and a salmon troller engaged in commercial fishing.
