The late Mohanbhai Sanjibhai Delkar Lok Sabha MP gave part of the SSR College of Arts, Science and Commerce land that he ran on a one rupee token rent to the local administration to establish the Namo Medical Education & Research Institute and the Union government allocated Rs. 189 crore for its construction. The foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 19 January 2019, and the first undergraduate batch commenced on 15 August 2019. The local administration brought bulldozers attempting to demolish the NAMO medical college. On 11 March 2021 a senior Marine Drive police officer told the Times of India, "Some people were allegedly trying to destabilise a college trust property of Delkar’s, and were demanding money from him and pressurising him to induct certain people as trustees".
