Drik Picture Library is a photography agency and picture library based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Drik Picture Library was established in 1989 by Bangladeshi writer and photographer Shahidul Alam and Bangladeshi writer and anthropologist Rahnuma Ahmed. [1] The name is Sanskrit for 'vision'. [1] It was set up to provide a platform for local photographers to publish internationally and provides various media services.
Drik is associated with Alam's other large project: Majority World [2] which aims to promote photographers from the global south and ensure fair compensation for their work. Drik is headquartered in Dhaka and has branch offices in India and the UK. [3]
Pathshala, the South Asian Media Institute, was set up in 1998 by the Bangladeshi photographer, writer, and activist Shahidul Alam, as "Pathshala South Asian Institute of Photography". [4] It is affiliated with Sunderland University and Bolton University in the UK; Oslo University College in Norway; Edith Cowan University in Australia; [5] and The Danish School of Media and Journalism.
In 2019, Pathshala introduced a four-year Bachelor of Social Science in photography program in affiliation with the University of Dhaka. [6] Prior to that, the certificates awarded by Pathshala for completion of its educational programs were not recognized by Bangladeshi universities. [7] Its students engage in social movements with their work. [8] [9] The school has received death threats in response to their work. [10]
Student awards have included first prize in World Press Photo Contest, The National Geographic All Roads Awards, and the Prix Pictet. Several students have made it to the Photo District News' 'PDN's 30 2008' [11] Alumna Taslima Akhter has won several awards, including the Best Photographer Award from the 5th Dali International Photography Exhibition in China. Shahidul Alam is a Bangladeshi photojournalist, teacher and social activist. He has been a photographer for more than forty years and "his photographs have been published in almost every major western media outlet".
Chobi Mela is a biennial international festival of photography held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the largest festival of photography held in Asia.
Jonathan Worth is a British portrait photographer and educator. He has worked for The New York Times, New Scientist magazine, Universal Music and Vogue amongst others. His shot-list includes musicians, sports stars and Hollywood actors like Jude Law, Colin Firth and Casey Affleck. In 2009 Worth pioneered two free and open undergraduate photography classes at Coventry University for which he was made an Higher Education Authority National Teaching Fellow. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

Bangladeshi art has a perennial history which originated more than two thousand years ago and is practiced even to this date. Among the various forms of Bangladeshi art, photography, architecture, sculpture and painting are the most notable.
Anwar Hossain was a Bangladeshi photographer and cinematographer. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Cinematography a record five times for the films Sundori (1979), Emiler Goenda Bahini (1980), Puraskar (1983), Anya Jibon (1995) and Lalsalu (2003).
Neo Ntsoma is a South African photographer known for her photojournalism, portraiture, music and popular culture photography. Born in Vryburg and brought up in the rural areas of Mafikeng in the North West Province, her fascination about films was triggered at an early age. Growing up in the apartheid era and seeing the negative portrayal images of black South Africans and the lack of participation of black women in a media industry dominated by white males, this reinvigorated her to want to make change, however it was not an easy dream to fulfill due to race restrictions at the time. Ntsoma attended St Mary's High School where she would be introduced to music, dance and drama, this is where she knew her career path was different from her peers. Despite several setbacks throughout her life she kept on pursuing her dream of being a photographer and succeeded. Ntsoma is known for her photographs that stand out for the odd angles from which they are taken and the way she plays with what is in focus in the photos and what is not. Besides being an award-winning photographer she has become an enthusiastic mentor for young photojournalists.
Final Embrace is a photograph showing two victims in the rubble of the April 2013 collapse of the eight storey Rana Plaza building in Savar Upazila, Bangladesh. The photograph, taken by freelance photographer Taslima Akhter, was awarded third prize in the World Press Photo (single) in the "spot news category". It was also selected among Time magazine's "Top 10 Photos of 2013".

Taslima Akhter is a Bangladeshi activist and photographer. She is a graduate of Dhaka University, as well as the photography school Pathshala. She is a member of several activist organizations. While documenting the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, she took a photograph of a woman and a man who had died in each other's arms, which became emblematic of the incident.
Photography in Bangladesh began with the creation of Bangladesh through the liberation war of 1971, against Pakistan. At the time, inevitably, war time photography was of utmost prominence, which has also largely helped document history. Since the war, photography and photojournalism have come to include and cover a large array of subjects including landscape, politics, wildlife, fashion etc.
A series of public protests in Bangladesh advocating improved road safety were held from 29 July to 8 August 2018. They were sparked by the deaths of two high-school students in Dhaka struck by a bus operated by an unlicensed driver who was racing to collect passengers. The incident impelled students to demand safer roads and stricter traffic laws, and the demonstrations rapidly spread throughout Bangladesh.
