The Droitwich Open Hard Courts [1] also known as the Bio-Strath Droitwich Open Hard Courts or Bio-Strath Droitwich for sponsorship reasons was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1968. [2] The tournament was organised by the Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club (now called the Droitwich Tennis Club), and played at the Brine Baths Park (now called Droitwich Lido Park), Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, England. [3] The tournament ran until 1974 then was discontinued.

History

In 1928 as the Droitwich Open Lawn Tennis Tournament was founded. [4] This tournament was played on grass courts and staged annually through till 1939 when it was discontinued. [5] In October 1967 Droitwich Tennis Club applied to the Lawn Tennis Association to restart a new open tennis hard court tournament that was to begin in 1968. [6] In May 1968 the first Droitwich Open Hard Courts tournament was held. [5] In 1971 that event became part of the Bio-Strath Circuit under the brand name the Bio-Starth Droitwich Open Hard Courts.

Venue

Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1920. [7] It staged the first Droitwich Open in 1928. [8] The club was located in what was then called Brine Baths Park (now called Droitwich Lido Park), Droitwich Spa, Worcesteshire. [7] The original club had 4 grass courts and 4 hard courts (clay). [9] In 1975 Droitwich Tennis Club moved to its current location at St Peters Church Lane. [7] The club still has the eight courts, they no longer have the original grass or clay courts, instead they are a combination of hard cement and artificial grass courts. [10]

The 1970 ILTF Women's Tennis Circuit was the 57th season since the formation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation in 1913, and the 96th season since the first women's tournaments were held in 1876.

The London Hard Court Championships and later known as the Bio-Strath London Hard Court Championships for sponsorship reasons was a clay court tennis event founded in 1919. It was held at the Hurlingham Club Ranelagh Gardens, Fulham, London, England through until 1971, when it failed find new sponsors for the following season, and the tournament ended.

The Tally-Ho! Open Tennis Championships also known as the Tally-Ho! Hard Courts, was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament originally founded in 1923. The tournament was held at the Tally Ho Lawn Tennis Club, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England until 1982.

The Wolverhampton Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1897 as the Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis Tournament. The first tournament was staged at Parkdale, Wolverhampton from 1897 to 1900 before it was discontinued in 1900. The Bio-Strath Circuit was a series tour of British tennis tournaments sponsored by the Swiss company Bio-Strath AG, a producer natural food supplements for sports people from 1970 to 1971. The circuit usually began in mid spring in April and ended in late summer in early August.

It began in 1970 and was staged at the West Warwickshire Sports Club (f.c1888), Solihull, Midlands, England. The tournament ran until 1981 when it was discontinued.

The Stourbridge Open also known as the Trophee Pernod Stourbridge for sponsorship reasons, was a mens and womens grass court tennis tournament founded in September 1887 as the Stourbridge Lawn Tennis Tournament, and first staged at the Stourbridge Cricket Club (f.1888) grounds, Stourbridge in what was then Worcestershire, but is now part of the West Midlands, England. This tournament has not had a continual history, being established then discontinued on four occasions. The last tournament took place in 1981.

It was first played at the Ashbrooke Sports Club Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England until the tournament ended in 1982.

The Keswick Open also known as the Keswick and Lake District Lawn Tennis Tournament was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1888. The tournament was organised by the Keswick Lawn Tennis Club, and played annually at Fitz Park, Keswick, Cumbria, England until 1910.

The Keswick Open Hard Courts was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1934 as the Lakeland Open. The tournament was organised by the Keswick Lawn Tennis Club, and played at Fitz Park, Keswick, Cumbria, England. It was played annually until 1967.

The Stalybridge Open was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1968 as the Stalybridge International Tennis Tournament. In 1970 the tournament was branded as the En-Tout-Cas Trophy Stalybridge, that year and was second leg of the En-Tout-Cas Circuit that year. The tournament was played at the Priory Tennis Club (f.1921), Stalybridge, Great Britain until 1971.

The Poole Open was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1970. In 1970 the tournament was branded as the En-Tout-Cass Trophy Poole, and was third leg of the En-Tout-Cass Circuit that year. The tournament was played at the East Dorset Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (f.1909), Poole, Great Britain until 1971.
