Dugawan (Hindi : दुगावां, Urdu : دگاواں) is a neighbourhood of Lucknow, located north of the Charbagh Railway Station. Its name is a blend of Do Gaon, meaning Two Villages.

Contents

It was established in the 19th century by the Sheikhs. The Sheikhs were given this piece of land (seven hundred acres) to settle in. [1] [2] This land comprised two villages.

History

Dugawan was established in the 19th century when the Shaikhzadas (Sheikhs) of Lucknow were granted 700 acres of land comprising two villages as compensation. This followed the appropriation of their palaces by Nawab Saadat Khan Burhanul-Mulk, which were later declared the property of the Nawab Wazir by Safdar Jang. [3] The neighbourhood's name derives from "Do Gaon," reflecting its origins as a merger of these villages. [4] Historical references also mention localities like Hata-e-Sheikhan, underscoring its ties to Sheikh communities. [5] Over time, Dugawan evolved into an integral part of Lucknow's urban fabric, influenced by the city's Nawabi heritage.

Geography

Dugawan is located north of Charbagh Railway Station in central Lucknow, within the Aminabad sublocality. [6] It lies at coordinates 26°50′41″N 80°55′12″E, with an elevation of 123 metres above sea level, typical of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. [7] The area is urbanised, with proximity to major roads and markets, and falls under the Lucknow Municipal Corporation for governance.

Demographics

As of recent estimates, Dugawan has a population of approximately 7,332 residents (3,817 males and 3,515 females). [8] It is part of the larger Lucknow urban agglomeration, which had a population of 2,817,105 in the 2011 Census. [9] The neighbourhood reflects Lucknow's multilingual environment, with Hindi, Urdu, and English as primary languages.

Economy

Dugawan's economy aligns with Lucknow's broader sectors, including retail, handicrafts, and small-scale services. Its location near Aminabad, a prominent shopping district, supports local commerce. Residents benefit from urban amenities like banking, transport, and utilities.

Culture

Dugawan participates in Lucknow's vibrant cultural traditions. The annual Ram Baraat procession, over 147 years old, passes through the neighbourhood, starting from Raniganj and traversing streets like Dugawan and Pandeyganj. [10] [11]

Transport

The neighbourhood is 2 km from Charbagh Railway Station and 11 km from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. [12] It is well-connected via local roads and public transport under the Lucknow Development Authority.
