Kendall Mountain is a small ski area located at the town of Silverton, Colorado. It was developed by the Grand Imperial Hotel in the 1950s and opened for business in the early 1960s. In 1983, the area was found to be operating without a permit and remained closed until the late 1990s. It advertises itself as "the cheapest ski area in the West." The area has run with a single 950-foot (290 m) tow rope for most of its operation but upgraded to a double chairlift in 2006, purchased from the Quechee Ski Area in Vermont. KSUT originally signed on as a non-commercial community radio station licensed to serve the community of Ignacio, Colorado. The station has since expanded to two distinct formats, Four Corners Public Radio, with a public radio format of NPR and music programming, and Southern Ute Tribal Radio, which airs Native American music and news. While the stations have different legal call letters, both stations still refer to themselves on-air, online, and in marketing as KSUT. Elizabeth Morley Cowles Gale Ballantine, known as Morley Cowles Ballantine, was an American newspaper publisher, editor, philanthropist, and women's rights activist. Scion of an Iowan newspaper publishing family, she and her second husband, Arthur A. Ballantine, purchased two Durango, Colorado newspapers in 1952, which they merged into The Durango Herald by 1960. The couple also started the Ballantine Family Fund, which supported arts and education in Southwest Colorado. After her husband's death in 1975, Ballantine took over the chairmanship of the family-owned publishing company, continuing to produce a weekly column and editorials. She received many journalism awards and several honorary degrees. She was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2002 and was posthumously inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2014.

Heidi Steltzer is a German-born American scientist of arctic and alpine ecology and professor at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado teaching Biology and Environment and Sustainability. Steltzer is known for her work on snow melt and how it affects ecosystems in the surrounding areas.
