Durham University Hockey Club is a field hockey club that is based at Durham University. The club's home ground is at the Maiden Castle Sports Centre in Durham. [1]

Structure

The club runs five men's teams, with the first XI playing (as of the 2021/22 season) in the Men's England Hockey League Premier Division, and five women's teams, with the first XI playing (as of the 2021/22 season) in the Women's England Hockey League Division One North. [2] [3] [4]

Coaches

As of 2021, the club is coached by Gareth Weaver-Tyler and Claire Dobison-Lee. [5] Durham graduate and Scottish international Jamie Cachia was previously part of the coaching staff. [6]

Gavin Featherstone, a Durham alumnus and former England international who had coached the United States at the 1984 Olympics and South Africa at the 1996 Olympics, led the Durham coaching team from 2003. [7] His period in charge saw an improvement in club fortunes, with the men participating in the National Hockey League for the first time. [7] He eventually joined Cornell University in 2012. [8]

ECAC Hockey is one of the six conferences that compete in NCAA Division I ice hockey. The conference used to be affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference, a consortium of over 300 colleges in the eastern United States. This relationship ended in 2004; however, the ECAC abbreviation was retained in the name of the hockey conference. ECAC Hockey is the only ice hockey conference with identical memberships in both its women's and men's divisions. Cornell has won the most ECAC men's hockey championships with 12, followed by Harvard at 11. Quinnipiac, which joined the league in 2005, already has 7 regular season championships. ECAC Hockey teams have won 10 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championships, most recently in 2023.

Cannock Hockey Club are an English field hockey team. They were established in 1905, and are based in the village of Hatherton, near Cannock, Staffordshire. Both the men's and women's first teams play in the England Hockey League Premier Division, the top division of hockey in England.

The 2020–21 Men's England Hockey League season was the 2020–21 season of England's field hockey league structure and England Hockey Men's Championship Cup. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom caused severe disruption with the season starting on 20 September 2020, five months later than scheduled and just one week after the delayed 2019–20 season had finally ended. However, after just five rounds of games the season was suspended during October due to COVID-19 once again. During March 2021 it became evident that the fixtures could not be fulfilled and the season was cancelled.

Maiden Castle sports centre, also known as the Graham Sports Centre and the Durham University Sport and Wellbeing Park, is the main sports complex at Durham University and the home for many of the university's teams. It also stages professional football as the home of Durham W.F.C. since 2020 and is used as an international venue, including hosting one of the four 2023 Women's EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers tournaments in summer 2022 and the 1995 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. It has been used as a training ground by Hartlepool United since 2021, having previously been used by Newcastle United.
