Dushyanth Sridhar is a speaker, and delivers talks on Hindu spiritual topics, including the Ramayana , Mahabharata , Bhagavata Mahapurana, Vishnu Purana , Divya Prabandham, and the lives and works of Hindu saints. He renders traditional pravacana (discourses), is a harikatha exponent, author, director and actor. With his fluency in English, Hindi and Tamil, he is a much sought-after speaker, and is often interviewed on television channels for his views on sanātana dharma.

In his white vēṣṭi and aṅgavastra with a nāmam on his forehead, [1] Dushyanth Sridhar captures the minds of the spiritually inclined [2] and connects easily to the young. [3] Upanyāsams (discourses) are no longer the forte of the old [4] as this upanyāsakar (speaker) has been making waves, [5] bringing youth (in India and abroad) into his circle of listeners. He is regarded as a phenomenon [6] and has broken several stereotypes when it comes to harikathā. [7] He is well known for his flawless English, [8] popular lingos, catchphrases [9] and is regarded as among the wittiest of storytellers. His followers run into lakhs, and are increasing with time. [10]

He manages Deśika Dayā, a charitable trust that has carried out extensive cultural and spiritual activities. His initiative titled ‘abhinava-e-pāṭhaśālā’ taught vedic content (during the pandemic) to over 7,000 śiṣyas worldwide sans discrimination.

Education

Dushyanth Sridhar is an alumnus of Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, SRDF Vivekananda Vidyalaya, The Oxford Senior Secondary School, and NSN Matriculation Higher Secondary School. He completed his B.Sc. (Chemical Engg) and M.Sc. (Chemistry) degrees from BITS Pilani. [8] He also interned at the Indian Institute of Science as an IAS fellow.

He has learnt Śrī Bhāṣyam, Gītā Bhāṣyam, Rahasya Traya Sāram, Bhagavad Viṣayam, Śatadūṣaṇī and Tirunetuntāṇṭakam from ācāryas like Villivalam Śrī Nārāyaṇa Mahādeśika, Nāvalpākkam Śrī Rāmānuja Tātācār, Cetlur Śrī Śrīvatsānkācār, Nelvoy Śrī Soumyanārāyaṇācār, Villur Śrī Karuṇākarācār and Devanārvilāgam Śrī Sāranāthācār.

Dushyanth Sridhar has delivered over 3,500 discourses across 23 countries, and brings to life the “art of storytelling that combines extensive knowledge accumulated from various sources, command over the language, presence of mind, emotions, dedication and spontaneity.” [11] His YouTube channel [12] has grown steadily since 2010 to encompass over 200K subscribers. [8] He is popularly known as the “cool evangelist of Hinduism”. [13]

He has conceptualized and produced classical dance productions including ‘Agre Paśyāmi’ (a colorful, dynamic, devotional spectacle that was a fine blend of verse and visuals [14] ), ‘Rāmāyaṇa Sudhā’ (a production that lends itself to creativity (that) was executed competently [15] ), ‘Śrīnivāsam Prapadye’ (the beautiful story (that) drew the audience into its core [16] ) and ‘Araṅganin Pādaiyyil’ (the concept was novel [17] ).

Movies (Actor)

Dushyanth Sridhar acted as the protagonist in the maṇipravāla movie 'Vedānta Deśika', produced and directed by veteran film-maker Muktha Srinivasan (2018). The movie was a portrayal of the life of Swamy Vedanta Desika. He learnt maṇipravāla (a mixture of Tamil and Sanskrit, spoken in earlier times), and even penned the storyline and dialogues for the movie. [18]

Dushyanth Sridhar directed the award-winning Sanskrit [19] movie, ‘Śākuntalaṃ’, starring Payal Vijay Shetty and Shubham Jaibeer Sahrawat (2023). While 95 per cent of the film is in Sanskrit, the rest is in Prakrit. The dubbing of dialogues for Shubham was done by Dushyanth Sridhar. [20] At the Rajasthan International Film Festival 2022 held at Jodhpur, the movie won the Special Viewers’ Choice award for Best Regional Feature Film.

Books

Dushyanth Sridhar authoured a coffee-table book [21] titled ‘Vedānta Deśikathe peerless poet-preceptor’ for the JSJS trust (2018). His narration in a lucid flow [22] and his display of acumen [23] throughout the book earned the appreciation of literary aficionados.

In 2024, he published ‘Rāmāyanam – Vol 1’ (HarperCollins). In it, Dushyanth presents the Ramayana as a dialogue between Narada and Valmiki, [24] with interesting details drawn from renowned and lesser-known works. The book was well received and noted for the ‘intense research’ that went into it. [25] The book has received considerable praise from notable personalities, including Sudha Ragunathan (Carnatic Musician and Padma Bhushan awardee), who called it a “collector’s delight”, and Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam (Bharatanatyam exponent and Padma Vibhushan awardee), who said it was a “delectable read, full of rare information”. [26]

Yatras (Heritage Tours)

In the last decade, Dushyanth Sridhar has organized heritage tours to 200 temples with over 3,500 yātrīs. The yātrās have been organized to Divya Desams and Abhimana Sthalams in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh; Kashmir Yatra; Bhutan, Cambodia, Nepal, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. During these yātrās, he has rendered discourses (in Tamil) on ancient Hindu scriptures, and details of the visiting sites, in both aspects viz. religion and architecture.

Socio-Cultural Causes

PIL filed over Tirupathi Laddu Adulteration

On 19 September 2024, a massive controversy erupted when the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, claimed that, during the administration of the former Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the ghee used for Tirupati laddu included beef tallow, fish oil, and pig lard in its ingredients. The Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, Tirupati, is regarded as one of the holiest sites for Hindus, and the news of adulteration of the offerings that would be sanctified and offered to devotees sparked outrage, with many accusing the authorities of disrespecting religious sentiments. [27]

On September 24, 2024, Dushyanth Sridhar, along with historian and author Vikram Sampath, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court of India, to move the Court to establish accountability in Hindu temples managed by government bodies, and to divest government / bureaucratic hold over temples. [28]

Varadharaja Perumal Temple, also called Hastagiri, Attiyuran,Attigiri, Kanchi koil, Thirukatchi, or Perumal koil is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu located in the city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints, or the Alvars. Sri Vaishnavism is a denomination within the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism, predominantly practiced in South India. The name refers to goddess Lakshmi, as well as a prefix that means "sacred, revered", and the god Vishnu, who are together revered in this tradition.

Katha is an Indian style of religious storytelling, performances of which are a ritual event in Hinduism. It often involves priest-narrators who recite stories from Hindu religious texts, such as the Puranas, the Ramayana or Bhagavata Purana, followed by a commentary (Pravachan). Kathas sometimes take place in households, involving smaller stories related to the Vrat Katha genre. The didactic Satyanarayan and Ramayana kathas instill moral values by revealing the consequences of human action (karma).

The Deepaprakasa Perumal Temple, also referred to as Tiruththanka, Desikar Avatara Sthalam, and Tooppul, is located in Kanchipuram in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Deepaprakasar, and his consort Lakshmi as Maragathavalli. This is the 3rd largest temple in southern Kanchipuram.

<i>Hamsa-Sandesha</i> Sanskrit poem

The Hamsa Sandesha or "The message of the Swan" is a Sanskrit love poem written by Vedanta Desika in the 13th century CE. A short lyric poem of 110 verses, it describes how Rama, hero of the Ramayana epic, sends a message via a swan to his beloved wife, Sita, who has been abducted by the demon king Ravana. The poem belongs to the sandeśa kāvya "messenger poem" genre and is very closely modeled upon the Meghadūta of Kālidāsa. It has particular significance for Sri Vaishnavas, whose god, Vishnu, it celebrates.

Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry was an Indian scholar and television personality who specialized in the Vedas and Puranas texts in the Telugu and Sanskrit languages. His works have included commentaries on All India Radio during Bhadrachalam's Sitarama Kalyanam and Brahmotsavam festivals. For Ugadi day, he recited the Panchanga Sravanam. On television he hosted a show Dharma Sandehalu and Dharma Sukshmalu where he answered questions regarding the Purana and various aspects of Hinduism. The show is telecast on the Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel and formerly on the Doordarshan Saptagiri Channel. He was the principal of a college run by the trust named Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams where they do pravachan (lectures) on the Puranas. He received the Raja-Lakshmi Award in 2005, and has also been conferred the title of Purana Vachaspati.

Prathivadhi Bhayankaram Aṇṇan was a Sri Vaishnava acharya, Tamil and Sanskrit scholar, and the composer of the popular Venkateswara Suprabhatam. Born Hasthigirinathar Aṇṇan in the year 1361, he was one of the prominent disciples of Kumara Nayanacharyas, belonged to a distinguished line of "Acharya Puruṣas", amassing followers. Aṇṇan composed many hymns, of which the popular Venkateshwara Suprabhatham, Venkateṣa Stotram, Venkateṣa Prapatti and Venkateṣa Mangaļāṣāsanam are recited daily at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at the wee-hours of the day to ritually rouse Venkateshvara. The rendition of the hymns by the singer M S Subbulakshmi is played everyday in millions of households in India and abroad.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lakshmi Kumara Tatacharya</span> Hindu saint and royal preceptor

Lakshmi Kumara Tatacharya, (1571–1643) was a prominent saint and guru of the Sri Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. He served as the rajaguru for a ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, Venkatapati Raya. He was also the overseer of a number of sacred temples known as the Divya Desams, including Srirangam, Kanchipuram, Tirumala, Melkote, and Srivilliputtur.

Sri Satyatma Tirtha, is an Indian Hindu philosopher, guru, scholar, spiritual leader, saint and the present pontiff of Uttaradi Math. Prior to 1947, the title was bestowed by the British Raj, and before them, by the kings of ancient India. In ancient India, a scholar that wrote works based on topics related to the shastras was granted the title Mahopadhyaya. The title Mahamahopadhyaya was bestowed on the best amongst the Mahopadhyaya scholars.

Muktha S. Sundar is an Indian film director and cinematographer who has worked on Tamil language films. Being the son of film maker Muktha Srinivasan, he made his directorial debut with Kodai Mazhai (1986), before making the films, Chinna Chinna Aasaigal (1989), Ethir Kaatru (1990) and Now Vedanta desika ha in sanskrit.

Sakuntalaṃ is a Sanskrit language historical film directed by Dushyanth Sridhar, a renowned speaker, writer and researcher on Indian scriptures. It is an adaptation of Kalidasa's work Abhijnana Shakuntalam. The film is produced by Dushyanth Sridhar and Srinivas Kannaa under Desika Daya Productions. The movie stars debutants Shubham Sahrawat and Payal Shetty in the leading roles. The movie was released on 12-Aug 2022 in BookMyShow Stream OTT platform commemorating the World Sanskrit Day.

<i>Dayashataka</i> Hindu hymn about Venkateshvara

The Dayashataka is a Sanskrit hymn composed by the Hindu philosopher Vedanta Desika. Comprising one hundred verses in ten decads, the hymn was written in praise of Venkateshvara, a form of Vishnu who is the principal deity of the Venkateshvara Temple, Tirupati.
