E. M. Ashraf is a Malayalam writer, film critic [1] and Journalist. He is currently the director of Middle East (News and Programmes), Kairali TV (Malayalam Communications Ltd). [2] He has written numerous books and articles in Malayalam language, most notably the biographies of veteran Malayalam writers Vaikom Muhammad Basheer [3] [4] and Sukumar Azhikode. [5] His interview with late Indian painter M. F. Husain was published in Malayalam and later translated into Arabic and English. [6] [7]

Currently he is settled in Dubai, UAE and appears in a weekly program in Kairali TV called 'Gulf Focus' [8] which addresses the concerns of Malayali diaspora living in Gulf countries. Early life, education and career

E.M. Ashraf (Edappakath Muhammed Ashraf) was born in Kadalai village, Kannur district, Kerala in a Muslim family to late K. P. Moidu and E. Ayshabi. He took post graduation in literature (MA Malayalam) and master's degree in journalism (MJ). He started his career in a regional magazine called Kala Kaumudi and later worked at Kerala Kaumudi before joining Kairali TV.

During his career, he held numerous positions as President of Indian Media Forum, Kannur district president of Kerala working journalist union, Advisory committee member to Dooradarshan, Advisory committee member to Police Press relation committee to the Chief Minister of Kerala etc. [15] [16]

Maniyambath Mukundan is an Indian author of Malayalam literature and former diplomat. He worked as a cultural attaché at the Embassy of France in Delhi from 1961 to 2004, while concurrently working as an author. Many of his early works are set in Mahe (Mayyazhi), his homeland, which earned him the moniker Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran. He is known to be one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature. VaikomMuhammad Basheer, popularly referred to as the Beypore Sultan, was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature, a humanist and an Indian independence activist. He was a novelist and short story writer noted for his path-breaking, down-to-earth style of writing that made him equally popular among literary critics as well as the common man. His notable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu, Mathilukal, Janmadinam,Anargha Nimisham and the translations of his works into other languages have earned him worldwide acclaim. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1982. He was also a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship, and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story. He was a recipient of the Vallathol Award in 1993.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sukumar Azhikode</span> Indian academic and critic (1926–2012)

Koloth Thattarath Sukumaran, popularly known as Sukumar Azhikode was an Indian academic, orator, critic and writer of Malayalam literature, known for his contributions to Malayalam language and insights on Indian philosophy. He was a scholar in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English languages and his work, Tatvamasi, published in 1984, is a notable work for its detailed interpretation of Indian philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads. He was a recipient of several honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award and Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2007, which he refused citing the award was a discrimination.

Madhupal Kannambathu is an Indian actor, director, and screenwriter who works in Malayalam cinema. Madhupal made his acting debut with Kashmeeram in 1994 and his directorial debut with Thalappavu (2008), which was about Arikkad Varghese and won several awards in 2008.

Thinakkal Padmanabhan, popularly known as T. Padmanabhan, is an Indian short story writer of Malayalam literature. He is a recipient of several awards including the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala. He declined some of the earlier awards he was selected for which include Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1973), Odakkuzhal Award (1995) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1996). Mahatma Gandhi University conferred on him the honoris causa degree of the Doctor of Letters in 2018. In 2023, he was honoured with the Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian award given by the Kerala Government.

Kandanisseri Vattamparambil Velappan Ayyappan or V. V. Ayyappan, better known by his pen name Kovilan, was an Indian Malayalam language novelist and freedom fighter from Kerala. He is considered one of the most prolific writers of contemporary Indian literature. In all, he had authored 11 novels, 10 collections of short stories, three essays and a play.

Sreekumaran Thampi is an Indian lyricist, music director, director, producer and screenwriter in Malayalam cinema. He also writes poetry and is a recipient of the Vallathol Award. Muttathu Varkey was an Indian novelist, short story writer, and poet of Malayalam. He was best known for a genre of sentiment-filled romantic fiction known as painkili (janapriya) novel in Malayalam literature, named after his famous novel Paadatha Painkili.

Ussangaantakathu Abdul Khader was an Indian author. He published in Malayalam, including novels, novellas, short stories, travelogues and non-fiction. His works have been translated to various languages including English, Hindi and Kannada. Thaha Madayi is a freelance journalist/writer and biographer from Kerala, India, writing in Malayalam language. He began contributing to Ballapankthi of Mathrubhumi weekly and has gone on to author many articles on significant topics, which appeared in leading Malayalam journals. He was instrumental in making visible Dalits and other marginalized groups through the literary genre of life-writing and has also published his interviews with many celebrities. He has made six documentary films and short films. He has presented cultural programs both on Radio and TV. He wrote the biographies of Kallen Pokkudan, Fabi Basheer, Gemini Shankaran, Mamukkoya, Punathil Kunjabdulla, Eranjoli Moosa, A Ayyappan and Captain Krishnan Nair.

The 2012 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award was announced on 11 July 2013. The Akademi fellowships and the awards for overall contribution were announced in October 2013.

Mathrubhumi Literary Award is a literary award instituted in 2001 by leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi. A sum of ₹3 lakh, a plaque and citation constitute the award. The award is conferred as a recognition of a writer's overall contribution to the Malayalam literature.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">N. Prabhakaran</span> Indian writer

N. Prabhakaran is a noted short story writer, novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, educationist, editor and columnist in Malayalam. He won the 2022 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. The eldest of the five children born to N Kunhambu and A Kalliani, Prabhakaran was born at Parassinikkadavu in Kannur district of Kerala on 30 December 1952. He spent his childhood days at Madayi. Prabhakaran studied at Madayi L P School, Govt. High School, Madayi, Payyannur College and Government Brennen College, Thalassery. He served as a lecturer at the Dept. of Malayalam of Lekshmipuram college of Arts and Science, Neyyoor, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, University College, Thiruvananthapuram, CKG Memorial Govt College, Perambra, and Govt Brennen College, Thalassery, and retired while serving as the Head of the Malayalam Department of Brennen College. The writer also served as a visiting professor of Malayalam at the University of Calicut. Prabhakaran resides at Dharmadam in Thalassery.

Noonhil Vadakkemadathil Padmanabhan Unithiri is a multilingual scholar, author, researcher, poet, progressive thinker, translator and teacher from Kerala, India. He has authored around 200 books in Sanskrit, Malayalam and English languages including translated works.
