ECNAD (the reverse spelling of 'dance') is a contemporary dance company founded in 1996 in Singapore with a multi-disciplinary approach.

History

It was formerly known as Dance Dimension Project. ECNAD (https://web.archive.org/web/20190413062251/http://www.ecnad.org/) is one of the first non government professional creative dance company that mushroomed amidst the then cultural desert of Singapore. This in turn sparks off the formation of many new contemporary dance companies in Singapore, a phenomenon never seem before in the modern cultural history of Singapore. Its founders and artistic directors Tan How Choon and Lim Chin Huat (Lim was 2000 Young Artist Award recipient) who are 2 ordinary individuals of indigenous approach to expression despite their western influences in fine arts, dance and sport training backgrounds.

From 1997 to 2000, it initiated a series of outreach site-specific works at fountains and architectural spaces in the urban environment. Suntec City fountain, [1] Bugis Junction fountain, Millennia Walk and UOB Plaza Atrium are some of the performance venues. These are projects that aims at facilitating environment and dance aesthetics of the general public through performances that highlight and work with the existing aesthetics of the chosen space. In fact, this is at that time, one of the first of its kind project by private individuals never seem before by the republic.

ECNAD has performed more than 50 creations over the past 12 years as in year 2008.

The company received both full-house and standing ovation for her tour performances "Floating Mirror" and "a-the-bird" in 35th Belgrade International Theatre Festival (BITEF), [2] and had an audience of 19,700 for "Tales from The Giant Blanket" performances in Festival of Asia in New Zealand in 2001.

In 2002, it was commissioned by the National Arts Council of Singapore to perform a multi-disciplinary artistic work entitled "Missing In Tall Pillars" [3] at the Asian Civilisations Museum.

In 2006, ECNAD was commissioned to co-conceptualised and created "Metamorphosis" [4] to open the evening for Mercedes-Benz Asia Fashion Award (regional final competition).

Its artistic ideal and vision continues to evolve and in March 2008, Artistic Co-Director Tan How Choon staged a multi-disciplinary production entitled In The Name Of Dance [5] that successfully assimilated dance, movement, acting and singing into one cohesive creation. He has also achieved a unique creative breakthrough by staging Songs For Gaia (2009), showcasing singing dancers assimilating a cappella singing, contemporary dance and his own music into a total and original theatrical experience.

Artistic Co-Director Lim Chin Huat has also achieved outreach breakthrough for the local dance scene through a collaboration with The Arts House and led a unique dance festival titled CampFire 2009 comprising free dance performances, dance photo competition/exhibition, a dance workshop and a dance marathon. CampFire 2009 is an event in conjunction with the Singapore River Festival 2009.

Both ECNAD Artistic Co-Directors will be working together to create a new production titled BUN & STONE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8crDM8ac6Bo) in March 2010 at The Arts House.

Currently, the company has also designed and programmed its own dance training programs under ECNAD Education filling the gap for keen individuals to receive all-rounded practical dance education on a part-time basis. ECNAD students' recent creative works were showcased in Part-Time Daydreaming (2008). In the past, students has been encouraged and supported through other creative showcases such as Bottled Dances and Out-Of-Site. The tradition of giving generous support and mentorship to keen individuals to creative dance has been practised since the beginning of the company!

The word "ecnad" is now becoming popular worldwide in representing performing arts activities and companies. It has also been attached with the meaning of "someone who lives for dancing". [6] The word "ecnad" has indeed come a long way since it was invented in 1996 by the Singaporean artists!

ECNAD is a creative sparkle uniquely from Singapore, with a humble beginning and strong aesthetic vision deserving of all supports and recognition!

The National Arts Council of Singapore is a statutory board established on 15 October 1991 to oversee the development of arts in Singapore. It is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The NAC provides grants, scholarships, awards and platforms for arts practitioners, as well as arts education and programmes for the general public.

Dance in Singapore comprises traditional and contemporary forms. It has a relatively short history of creative, artistic and professional dance. The range of dance reflects the cultural diversity of Singapore. There is a consistent struggle between the rejection and acceptance of western dance influences and the re-emphasis of ethnic cultures from time to time. The Singapore identity through dance is a challenging one often on an outward looking perception rather than the acceptance and recognition of indigenous/original creativity. Notable non-profit artistic dance legacy include ECNAD and Arts Fission Company.

The Substation Independent contemporary arts centre in Singapore

The Substation is Singapore's first independent contemporary arts centre. It was founded in 1990 by Kuo Pao Kun. The Substation is centrally located in the city's civic district and was the first building under the National Arts Council's "Arts Housing Scheme". It officially opened on 16 September 1990. The Substation is a non-profit organisation and registered Institution of Public Character in Singapore, which relies on financial and in-kind support from the general public, commercial organisations and government ministries to cover the costs of operating and developing arts & educational programmes.

Ballet Fantastique

Ballet Fantastique is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, chamber ballet company based in Eugene, Oregon, and co-directed by mother-daughter team Donna and Hannah Bontrager. Ballet Fantastique was founded in October 2000 and currently has three components: A professional chamber ballet company, a pre-professional academy in the Russian Vaganova method of training, and a busy outreach wing. Ballet Fantastique became a resident company at Eugene's Hult Center for the Performing Arts in June 2014.

AXIS Dance Company is a professional physically integrated contemporary dance company and dance education organization founded in 1987 and based in Oakland, California. It is one of the first contemporary dance companies in the world to consciously develop choreography that integrates dancers with and without physical disabilities. Their work has received nine Isadora Duncan Dance Awards and nine additional nominations for both their artistry and production values.

The Singapore Dance Theatre is Singapore's national dance company, founded in 1988 by Anthony Then and Goh Soo Khim. It made its debut in June 1988 at the Singapore Festival of The Arts and received its first arts patronage by the then-Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Ong Teng Cheong. The Artistic Director of the company is Janek Schergen.

Asian American Arts Centre

The Asian American Arts Centre (AAAC) is a non-profit organization located in Chinatown in New York City. Founded in 1974, it is one of the earliest Asian American community organizations in the United States. The Arts Centre presents the ongoing developments between contemporary Asian & Asian American art forms and Western art forms through the presentation of performance, exhibitions, and public education. AAAC's permanent collection, which it has accumulated since 1989, contains hundreds of contemporary Asian American art works and traditional/folk art pieces. The organization also has an Artists Archive which documents, preserves, and promotes the presence of Asian American visual culture in the United States since 1945. This includes the East Coast, especially the greater New York area; the West Coast; and some artists in Canada, Hawaii, and overseas. The artists include Asian Americans producing art, Asian artists who are active in the United States, and other Americans who are significantly influenced by Asia. Pan-Asian in outlook, the Arts Centre's understanding of ‘Asia’ encompasses traditions and influences with sources ranging from Afghanistan to Hawaii.

Kuo Pao Kun was a playwright, theatre director, and arts activist in Singapore who wrote and directed both Mandarin and English plays. He founded three arts and drama centres in Singapore, conducted and organised a number of drama seminars and workshops, and mentored Singaporean and foreign directors and artists. Kuo is acknowledged by both locals and foreigners as the pioneer of Singapore theatre, and was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1990 for his contributions to Singapore theatre. His plays are characterised for their dramatic and social commentary, use of simple metaphors and multiculturalism themes, and have been staged locally and internationally.

Marilyn Wood is an American choreographer, intermedia artist, and dancer.

John Clang

John Clang, born Ang Choon Leng, is a Singaporean visual artist, photographer and independent filmmaker. Clang's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. National Museum of Singapore and Singapore Art Museum acquired his artwork as part of their permanent collection. Clang currently lives and works in Singapore and New York.

S. Chandrasekaran is a Singaporean contemporary artist known for his pioneering work in performance art in 1980s Singapore. He has held executive positions as Head of School at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LASALLE College of Arts.

Carriageworks Multi-purpose arts venue in Sydney

Carriageworks is a multi-arts urban cultural precinct located at the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops in Redfern, Sydney, Australia. Carriageworks showcases contemporary art and performing arts, as well as being used for filming, festivals, fairs and commercial exhibitions. The largest such venue in Australia, it is a cultural facility of the NSW Government, and receives support from Create NSW and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts. The centre has commissioned new work by Australian and international artists, and has been home to eight theatre, dance and film companies, including Performance Space, Sydney Chamber Opera and Moogahlin Performing Arts, and a weekly farmers' market has operated there for many years.

Ho Tzu Nyen is a Singaporean contemporary artist and filmmaker whose works involve film, video, performance, and immersive multimedia installations. His work brings together fact and myth to mobilise different understandings of Southeast Asia's history, politics, and religion, often premised upon a complex set of references from art history, to theatre, cinema, and philosophy. Ho has shown internationally at major exhibitions such as the Aichi Triennale, Japan (2019), the Sharjah Biennial 14, United Arab Emirates (2019), and the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2018). In 2011, Ho represented Singapore at the 54th Venice Biennale at the Singapore Pavilion, presenting the work The Cloud of Unknowing.
