eFront is an eLearning platform (also known as a Course Management System (CMS), or Learning Management Systems (LMS), or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)). eFront has historically been coming in a number of editions, from an open-source edition to the latest eFrontPro edition (which is the only available one in 2018). [1]

eFront is designed to assist with the creation of online learning communities while offering various opportunities for collaboration and interaction through an icon-based user interface. The platform offers tools for content creation, tests building, assignments management, reporting, internal messaging, forum, chat, surveys, calendar and others. It is a SCORM 1.2 certified [2] and SCORM 2004 / 4th edition compliant [3] system translated in 40 languages. [4]

eFront is commonly included in lists of well known open-source learning systems [5] [6] [7] [8] or is referred to as a Moodle alternative. [9] [10] [11] [12] Independent comparison matrices between learning management systems often favor eFront, especially under usability characteristics. [13] [14] Several research papers and technology portals describe the system under functionality, [15] [16] [17] usability [18] and standards perspectives. [19]

History

Initial development of the platform began in 2001 as a research prototype funded by the Greek government, led by Dimitris Tsingos and Athanasios Papangelis. SCORM development together with a shift on AJAX technologies lead to the publishing of a stable 2.5 version during 2005. eFront was then rewritten from scratch, making essential changes to the core structure of the system and released under an open-source license in September 2007. [20] Enterprise extensions were integrated with the platform on version 3.5. Social extensions were the most significant addition to version 3.6. [21] On May 9, 2016, Epignosis LLC announced the signing of a strategic partnership deal with US-based software consulting and services provider DHx Software. [22]

Editions

Apart from the community edition that is distributed as open source software, there are three commercial editions with a modified features set, targeted at learning professionals, educational institutions and enterprises. [23] All versions are provided with their source code but only the community edition uses an Open Source Initiative (OSI) accepted license. The commercial versions of eFront are distributed via a partners network. [24]

Awards

In September 2012 eFront won an award from Elearning! Magazine as the best Open Source Solution. [25] In April 2010 eFront won a coveted[ citation needed ] bronze award for technology excellence in the Learning Management Technology for Small- and Medium-sized Businesses category from Brandon-Hall Research. [26] eFront is also listed as one of the Top LMS Software Solutions for 2012 and 2013. [27]

eFront runs without modification on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and any other operating system that supports PHP 5.1+ and MySQL 5+. The platform is being built using the object oriented programming paradigm and its architecture is based on the 3-tier design approach separating the system's presentation from its logic and data. [29] The platform is maintained through a community driven process. This leads to small development cycles that produce incremental improvements to the system, followed by bigger development cycles that integrate features requiring architectural changes. The development and testing procedures utilize several aspects of extreme programming. [30]

LAMS is 'inspired' by the concept and principles of IMS Learning Design.

Blackboard Learn is a web-based virtual learning environment and learning management system developed by Blackboard Inc. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative is a US government program that conducts research and development on distributed learning and coordinates related efforts broadly across public and private organizations. Chamilo

Chamilo is a free software e-learning and content management system, aimed at improving access to education and knowledge globally. It is backed up by the Chamilo Association, which has goals including the promotion of the software, the maintenance of a clear communication channel and the building of a network of services providers and software contributors.

BigBlueButton Open source web conference system

BigBlueButton is an open source web conferencing system designed for online learning. BigBlueButton is a tool used by instructors, which helps them access to Learning Management Systems, engagement tools and analytics.

Docebo is a software as a service company that specializes in learning management system. Docebo was founded in 2005. Its product Docebo Learn LMS is compatible with Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) 1.2 and 2004 as well as Tin Can. The program operates as a cloud-hosted software as a service platform as well as being third-party compatible. It currently runs version 7.5. DoceboLMS is available in more than 40 languages.

Edu-sharing E-learning integration solution

edu-sharing is an open-source e-learning integration solution. The core of the system is a repository for the cooperative creation, management, and usage of objects such as files, links, instances of integrated tools and courses of connected learning management systems such as Moodle. Through open interfaces, different edu-sharing repositories can be connected to each other as well as to diverse repositories or repository networks. iSpring Suite is a PowerPoint-based authoring toolkit produced by iSpring Solutions that allows users to create slide-based courses, quizzes, dialog simulations, screencasts, video lectures, and other interactive learning materials. The output courses are published in HTML5. iSpring-made courses are compatible with the following LMS standards:SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, xAPI, and cmi5.

A Learning Record Store (LRS) is a data store system that serves as a repository for learning records collected from connected systems where learning activities are conducted. It is an essential component in the process flow for using the Experience API (xAPI) standard by ADL or the Caliper standard by IMS Global. The Experience API is also known as the "Tin Can API" and is an Open Source e-learning specification developed after AICC and SCORM. The concept of the LRS was introduced to the e-learning industry in 2011, and proposes a shift to the way e-learning specifications function.

Its online training platform, directly connects content providers with employees and businesses for online training resources and specially designed courses for professionals, which can be accessed through a Learning management system. The company was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. As of January 2016, OpenSesame tracks around 20,000 courses from more than 300 vendors.

Growth Engineering is a SAAS learning technologies company. They provide a platform for e-Learning, also known as a learning management system. Established in 2004, Growth Engineering offers a learning portal for companies and their employees, partners and customers. Growth Engineering is compatible with SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and xAPI. In a Technavio report, Growth Engineering were recognised as a vendor in the game-based learning market.

Udutu

Udutu is an SAAS platform for e-learning, and is based in Victoria, British Columbia. The company's Udutu LMS product is used for employee training, customer training, channel training, and compliance training. Udutu also offers a course authoring tool and a PowerPoint to HTML5 converter for SCORM compatibility.
