Ethiopian News Network (ENN TV) was an Ethiopian television channel based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The channel was launched in 2016 on Nilesat. [1] It was the first private station based in Ethiopia to be focused on news and politics outside of the national broadcaster EBC. [2] ENN TV faced criticisms by several organizations for alleged use of misinformation and propaganda manipulation which led the channel to official closure on June 29, 2018. [3]

Allegations

The channel was accused by several organizations, including Ethiopian Commercial Bank and Ethio telecom for lack of sponsorship and remaining non-commercial activity. ENN TV also criticized by the government press conferences and communications, notably from Foreign Affairs, and revoked the right to broadcast to certain events. They also self-proclaimed that the channel have been in dispute with Oromia Region and Addis Ababa administrations. Many media critics blamed it for the use of propaganda model and photograph manipulation – those said involved in the 2014–2016 Oromo protests event. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Agency stated that the channel was refused to broadcast the speech of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in aftermath of bombing at Meskel Square rally on June 23, 2018. [3]

The mass media in Ethiopia consist of radio, television and the Internet, which remain under the control of the Ethiopian government, as well as private newspapers and magazines. Ten radio broadcast stations, eight AM and two shortwave, are licensed to operate in Ethiopia. The major radio broadcasting stations include Radio Fana a private station, Radio Voice of One Free Ethiopia, and the Voice of the Revolution of Tigray. The only terrestrial (broadcast) television networks are government owned and include EBC and other regional stations. In keeping with government policy, radio broadcasts occur in a variety of languages including Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrigna, and more. There are also many video sharing websites which are a popular way of getting information as well as entertainment in Ethiopia.

JTV Ethiopia is an Ethiopian free-to-air satellite television channel owned by Yosef Gebre, a journalist, singer and philanthropist who previously began his TV show in EBS TV before establishing his own channel. It is based in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S and launched in 2016 on Nilesat. In May 2020, the channel in its standard-definition (SD) television platform was officially closed as a result of poor revenue from each employee and the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the station for less advertising income. However, the channel still exists in HD and is transmitted via Ethiosat.

Fana TV is an Ethiopian satellite television network owned by Fana Broadcasting Corporate, which is a state-owned company. Launched in September 2017, the network is based in Ethiopia and broadcasts programming in Amharic. It has its studios located at the headquarters of Fana Broadcasting Corporate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In recent years, the channel stretched its network with number of news correspondents across the nation.
