EQAL was a media and technology company founded in 2008 by Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried, two of the creators of lonelygirl15 . [1] EQAL built influencer networks around celebrities, consumer brands, and intellectual properties. Prior to building influencer networks, EQAL produced lonelygirl15 (LG15) as well as for producing other series in the LG15 Universe (the universe using the mythology started by the lonelygirl15 series) including KateModern in association with Bebo [2] and LG15: The Resistance , [3] as well as Harper’s Globe, the original web series, commissioned by CBS as a tie-in for the series, Harper’s Island . [4] In 2012, Everyday Health acquired EQAL.

History

In 2006, Miles Beckett met Mesh Flinders, a screenwriter, at a birthday party. Beckett had the idea to use short internet videos to tell a story. Flinders had developed a character that he thought would be perfect for the project. Together the two of them contacted Greg Goodfried for legal advice, and the three of them subsequently created lonelygirl15. [5] The group became formally known as LG15 Studios/Telegraph Ave. Productions. [6] [7]

While Mesh Flinders went on to pursue other endeavors at the end of 2007, [8] in April 2008, Beckett and Goodfried announced the formation of EQAL. [9] The new company raised $5 million in venture capital. [1] Among EQAL’s initial investors were Spark Capital, Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape, Conrad Riggs, formerly with Mark Burnett Productions, tech investor Ron Conway, and Georges Harik, former developer of new products at Google. [6]

In May 2008, a partnership between EQAL and CBS was announced to create new original programming and online tie-ins for CBS network shows. [10] [11] [12] A few months later, it was announced that EQAL would produce the Harper's Globe online companion show for CBS's Harper's Island. [13] Through the CBS deal, EQAL met Anthony E. Zuiker, creator of CSI, and was hired by Zuiker to create the online component for Zuiker's first novel, Level 26 [ permanent dead link ], which was released in September 2009. [14] The Zuiker partnership was the first in a series of similar media partnerships.

In 2009, EQAL launched two new original web series with dedicated social networks: Get Cookin for Food Network host Paula Deen [15] and The Kind Life With Alicia Silverstone for Silverstone about global warming and vegetarian topics. [16]

In 2010, EQAL launched The Real Women of Philadelphia with Digitas for Kraft Foods and Paula Deen which went on to garner a gold Effie award in 2011. EQAL continued to launch celebrity sites in association with Skinny Bitch and Made Just Right with Earth Balance.

In 2011, Robert Weiss joined EQAL, launching their Media Networks division to build social networks around celebrities and influencers. They have launched nearly 40 sites with another 10 expected this year. EQAL and its Media Networks recently won 6 Awards of Distinction from the International Academy of Visual Arts. [17]

In October 2011, YouTube announced an initiative to fund the production of new channels containing original "premium" content. EQAL became one of the first partners in this program, launching a fashion-oriented channel known as u look haute on April 3, 2012. [18] [19]

In September 2012, Everyday Health acquired EQAL. The company become an entity within its lifestyle division. [20]

<i>lonelygirl15</i> American TV series or program

lonelygirl15 is an American science fiction thriller web series created by Miles Beckett, Mesh Flinders, Greg Goodfried, and Amanda Goodfried. It was independently released on YouTube from June 16, 2006, to August 1, 2008, and was also briefly released on Revver and Myspace. The series revolves around the initially mundane life of homeschooled 16-year-old Bree Avery, who uses the username Lonelygirl15 online. She goes on the run with her friend Daniel after her parents' mysterious religion is revealed to be The Order, a blood-harvesting operation that wants her "trait positive" blood. The series is presented through video blogs, or vlogs, originally recorded solely from Bree's bedroom.

<i>The New Detectives</i> Television series

The New Detectives: Case Studies in Forensic Science is a documentary true crime television show that aired two to three different cases in forensic science per episode from 1996 to 2004. Episode reruns currently air on the Discovery Channel, TLC, the Investigation Discovery network, Pluto TV, and the Justice Network. Before the series was canceled, the show also aired on The History Channel and Court TV in the United States and Canal D in Canada, as well as Botswana TV. The show was also carried by international markets where the series was shown on the Discovery Channel UK, Discovery Europe, the Crime & Investigation Network in Australia, Prime TV in New Zealand, TV Norge, TV Danmark, Kanal 5 in Sweden, and RTL in the Netherlands.

<i>KateModern</i> British TV series or programme

KateModern was the sister series of lonelygirl15. The series, which was announced on 16 July 2007, began filming on 9 July and the first video, Fight and Flight, was released on 16 July. The show is produced by EQAL in partnership with Bebo. It ended on 28 June 2008, slightly less than a year following its original release.

<i>Harpers Island</i> American horror mystery television series

Harper's Island is an American mystery limited series created by Ari Schlossberg for CBS. Schlossberg, Jeffrey Jackson Bell and Jon Turteltaub served as executive producers. The series features an ensemble cast led by Elaine Cassidy alongside Christopher Gorham, Katie Cassidy, Cameron Richardson, Adam Campbell, C.J. Thomason, and Jim Beaver. The plot follows a group of family and friends that travel to the titular locale for a destination wedding, only to learn that there is a killer among them. At the center of the mystery is Abby Mills, whose mother was one of several people murdered by John Wakefield seven years prior.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bebo</span> American social networking website

Bebo was an American social networking website that originally operated from 2005 until its bankruptcy in 2013 and relaunched in February 2021. The site relaunched several times after its bankruptcy with a number of short-lived offerings, including instant messaging and video streaming, until its acquisition by Amazon in July 2019 when it was shut down. It was announced in January 2021 that it would be returning as a new social media site the month after. By May 2022, it had once again been shut down, without having ever left beta testing.

LG15: The Resistance is a web television series produced by EQAL that took place within the LG15 Universe. The series was first announced on July 4, 2008, via the official behind-the-scenes LG15 blog, Inside. It premiered on September 16, 2008, at the New York Television Festival, and was first uploaded for public viewing on September 20, 2008. Daily content was provided in the form of video blogs, images, text blogs, and other information posted daily from the characters at LG15.com. On the following Saturday, all of the content from the previous week was compiled into one 6- to 10-minute episode to end that week's "chapter". Each week of the show featured music from a different artist.

<i>N1ckola</i> Polish web series

N1ckola is a Polish webseries based on the lonelygirl15 Universe. It was produced by EQAL, Agora SA, and A2 Multimedia and began in 2009. According to Greg Goodfried and Miles Beckett of EQAL, the show "blends reality, documentary, and fiction. It was always our hope to expand the LG15 Universe into new countries through full-format licensing deals like this one with Agora. N1ckola is the perfect example of a business model we'd like to replicate in the future in even more countries."

LG15: Outbreak is a social show produced by lonelygirl15 fans in 2010, under the name of Tempest Pictures, and presented by EQAL on LG15.com. Due to the downturn in the economy, EQAL's show LG15: The Resistance was put on hiatus, and instead, the producers decided to open a contest for the fans. The contest allowed fans to submit pilot episodes and trailers of spin-off shows based on the Lonelygirl15 mythology, where the selected pilot would become an official LG15 Franchise show. The winner of the first season of "LG15: The Show Is Yours" was LG15: The Last, and LG15: Outbreak was declared the winner of the second season. At the time of the first contest, allowing a crowd-sourced project to take over production responsibilities was seen as "unprecedented".

As such, it was the first web series produced as a YouTube original program to become a weekly network television series. Since September 28, 2013, Recipe Rehab has aired on CBS as part of Litton's CBS Dream Team Saturday morning block; first-run episodes continued to air until July 25, 2015, with reruns airing until September 26. The television program is designed to meet educational programming requirements defined by the Federal Communications Commission.
