Éveil sportif Sainte-Marie de la Guillotière de Lyon or Éveil Lyon was a French basketball club that was based in Lyon. The club's name was commonly abbreviated to ESSMG Lyon. The club is now dissolved.

Lyon is the third-largest city and second-largest urban area of France. History

The club, affiliated to the parish patronage of France's Gymnastics and Sports Sponsorships Federation, and then to the Sports Federation of France, is best known for its good performance in the top-tier level basketball championship of France, in the decade of 1940s. The club included several renowned players, including Robert Busnel and André Buffière.

The French basketball league system or French basketball league pyramid, is a series of interconnected competitions for professional basketball clubs in France. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and demotion system between competitions at different levels. There are currently six different competitions on the pyramid: the 1st-tier LNB Pro A, the 2nd-tier LNB Pro B, the 3rd-tier Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1), the 4th-tier Nationale Masculine 2 (NM2), the 5th-tier Nationale Masculine 3 (NM3), and the 6th tier LNB Espoirs.

LNB Pro A top French mens basketball league

The LNB Pro A, commonly known as Pro A and for sponsorship reasons named the Jeep Élite, is the top-tier level men's professional basketball league in France. The competition has existed since 1921. Since 1987, the Ligue Nationale de Basket has organized the league. The bottom two placed teams from each season are relegated to the second tier level Pro B. The winner of the play-offs of the Pro A is crowned the French national champion.

Robert Busnel was a French professional basketball player, coach, and administrator. During his playing career, the 1.92 m tall Busnel, played at the power forward position. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, in 1989, and was awarded the Olympic Order, by the IOC, in 1990. He was awarded the Glory of Sport in 1994. He was inducted into the French Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2005. In 2007, he was enshrined as a contributor to the FIBA Hall of Fame.

The club was formed in 1946, following the demise of FC Grenoble (French champion in 1943 and 1944), and the move of most of its staff to ESSMG Lyon. Robert Busnel led the club to win the championship title in France, against Championnet, which was led by Henri Lesmayoux; in the French championship finals, on May 25, 1946, at the Palais des sports. [1] Éveil sportif also played in the league's finals in 1947, where they lost to Paris Université (PUC). [2] The departure of Robert Busnel for Marseille the next season, marked the end of the ambitions of the club, which then merged with Association sportive de Villeurbanne in 1948, to found ASVEL.

Football Club Grenoble Basket was a French basketball club that was based in Grenoble, France. The club is now disbanded.

Union athlétique de Marseille, commonly known as UA Marseille, was a French basketball club from the city of Marseille. The club existed from 1940 to 1949. It competed in the top-tier level French League, and won the league's championship in 1948.

The club's home games are played at L'Astroballe, which seats 5,556 people.

Paris Basket Racing, or PBR, was a French professional basketball club from Paris. It was founded in 1922, as the basketball section of the multi-sports club Racing Club de Paris. The team took the name "Paris Basket Racing" in 2000. In 2007, the club merged with another club from the Paris area, Levallois Sporting Club Basket, to form the current version of the club, called Levallois Metropolitans.

The French Federation of Basketball is the governing body of basketball in France. It was founded in 1932.

The 1949 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1949, was the sixth FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. Seven national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) took part in the competition. The competition was hosted by Egypt after the Soviet Union refused to host it, as was the Soviet's obligation as defending champion under FIBA Europe rules. Czechoslovakia, the silver medallist at EuroBasket 1947, had been the host that year, so was not asked to repeat hosting duties and those duties fell to bronze medallist Egypt.

The French Basketball Cup, or French Basketball Federation Cup, is the annual national basketball federation cup competition of France. It is organized by the French Basketball Federation. It is also known as the Trophée Robert Busnel, named after the late basketball player Robert Busnel, who died in 1991.

The 1920-21 French Rugby Union Championship 1920-21 was won by US Perpignan that beat Toulose in the final.

The 1931-32 French Rugby Championship was won by le Lyon OU that defeated Narbonne in the final. The Championship was contested by 40 teams divided in eight pools of five.

The first team of the club currently plays in the Nationale Masculine 1, the third tier level in France. The organisation is managed by the Fédération Française de Basket-Ball (FFBB), the national French basketball association.
