East Fairmont High School is a public high school in Pleasant Valley, United States, just east of Fairmont. The school has been known also as East Side High. [2]

Contents

The school is classified as "AA". Its school colors are blue and gold, and the athletic teams are known as the Bees. It is one of three high schools still active in Marion County, along with Fairmont Senior High School and North Marion High School. [3] It is fed by East Fairmont Middle School. [4]

History

The school was established in 1917 to fix overcrowding problems of Fairmont's other school at the time, Fairmont High School (now more commonly known as Fairmont Senior High School). [5] Originally, the school was held in the rooms of Central School, [5] but the school's location was moved twice in 1921 and 1993 respectively. [6]

Fine arts

East Fairmont High School offers different fine arts programs to its students, such as a school marching band and a choir program.

Marching band

The school has a marching band, the East Fairmont High School Busy Bee Band and Honeybees, [7] which was founded and originally directed by Earl W. McConnell, Sr. [8] As of 2010, TJ Bean is the current director of the band. [9] [10]

The band has represented the school, Fairmont, and West Virginia in different notable events. The band performed at the Rose Parade and the inaugurations of Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. [11] On January 1, 2000, the band was the first north-central WV school to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade. [12] In 2009, the band played at the inaugural parade for then-WV Governor Joe Manchin. [13] Fairmont Senior High School has held an annual Band Spectacular, which the East Fairmont band has frequently performed at. [14] [15] [16]

The East Fairmont band also hosts an annual Follies show in East Fairmont High School's auditorium. [17]

Choir program

East Fairmont also has a choir program. [18] The choir program includes the East Fairmont High School Elizabethan Chamber Singers & My Fair Ladies, which has held an annual winter concert. [19] The school's choir also has performed in Hawaii for a Pearl Harbor honor concert in 2018. [20]

Athletics

East Fairmont offers many different sports to its students, including baseball, basketball, track and field, football, soccer, wrestling, softball, and volleyball. [21]

East-West rivalry

East Fairmont has a rivalry in sports with Fairmont Senior High School, which started on October 25, 1921, when the two schools first played football together. [22] The schools share the historic East–West Stadium for football games. [23] The East-West football games have since been a significant part of this rivalry.

Easy Fairmont is generally an above average school in school rankings. [29] [30] [31] In 2020, U.S. News & World Report ranked East Fairmont High School as 3,488th in national ranking, 16th in state ranking, and 2nd in county ranking. [32] As of 2020, the school is in the top 10 percent of West Virginia public schools for "highest reading/language arts proficiency" and "highest graduation rate", but it is in the bottom 50 percent for "math proficiency". [33]

Football, baseball, cheerleading, golf, softball, track, and volleyball are broken into these three classes. Soccer, Cross country, tennis, and wrestling are broken into two classes. Swimming is one class only. For basketball, schools are divided into four classes. Schools have the option of playing "up" one class in a particular sport.

West Virginia MetroNews is a radio network heard on many radio stations throughout the State of West Virginia. The network is owned by the West Virginia Radio Corporation. West Virginia MetroNews offers a mix of news and talk. It held the rights to live play-by-play coverage of West Virginia University Mountaineers sports games, which it marketed under the DBA name "Mountaineer Sports Network", but lost these rights following the end of the 2012/13 basketball season. The network also provides coverage of select high school football and basketball games that happen in West Virginia.

The WVSSAC Super Six Football Championships is a series of high school football games, typically held on the first weekend of December, that determine the high school champions of the U.S. state of West Virginia. The tournaments that lead to the championship games, as well as regular-season competition, are governed by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC). The games have the name of "Super Six" because six teams play in the state's three championship games. The Championship games are held at Wheeling Island Stadium in Wheeling, a two-day affair, with one game on Friday and two on Saturday.

The West Virginia High School Football State Championships have been held since the early 1900s. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission, WVSSAC began its formal recognition of WV State Football Championships in 1937 with the state's sports writers' vote. The WVSSAC began a class system, dividing larger and smaller schools in 1947. WVSSAC official playoff games began in 1948. Prior to the WVSSAC's involvement in an official playoff, there were other systems in play. From 1916 to 1955 the WVSSAC was called the West Virginia Athletic Association.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">East-West Stadium</span>

The East-West Stadium is a football stadium in Fairmont, West Virginia. The stadium was built in 1938 using Works Progress Administration funding. The stadium is operated and owned by the Marion County Board of Education. The stadium is the sight of the football rivalry between Fairmont's two high schools: Fairmont Senior High School and East Fairmont High School.

The AAA West Virginia High School Boys' Soccer State Tournament is an annual postseason soccer tournament held in West Virginia, United States. The tournament is open to all high school boys' soccer teams that compete in the state's AAA classification, which is the largest division in West Virginia high school soccer. The tournament is organized by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC).
