Eastbourne Airbourne, also known as the Eastbourne International Airshow, is a 4-day international air show that runs every August in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England. The event features Battle of Britain memorial flights and aircraft from the RAF and USAF, among others, and enjoys a long relationship with the Red Arrows display team.
Starting in 1994, [4] [5] the event is produced and promoted by Eastbourne Borough Council.
A dedicated FM radio station, "Radio Airbourne", broadcasts on 87.7FM during the event.
The event is usually held over 2 to 4 days in the middle of August.
Ground displays are typically held on Eastbourne seafront, in the morning and afternoon, while air displays are performed in the skies over the seafront, from lunchtime to mid-afternoon. [6]
The event was Highly Commended in 2016 at the Visit Britain Awards, organised by the UK's national tourist board.
Access to the event is free and open to the public, without reservation. The event has been marketed as both the United Kingdom's largest free airshow, and the world's biggest free seafront airshow.
The costs of Airbourne are funded from the budget of Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC), from local taxation and other operating income. The Council claim it is a significant contributor to Eastbourne's tourist income, yet its true value to the town has been disputed locally. [7]
In 2008, there was particular controversy when EBC decided to introduce a £5 event admission fee, to a part of Eastbourne seafront set aside as a special viewing area, which had previously been accessible to the public for free. The intention behind charging admission was to help cover the show's rising costs, especially in a year when a major event sponsor was sought but not found. However, it caused an outcry in the local press. [8]
That year visitor numbers were down, costs were up and there was an operational loss of "hundreds of thousands of pounds", alongside bad publicity. The local council had initially projected that the event would make a £183,000 profit. In response to the blunders, the council ordered an internal inquiry and subsequently reversed the introduction of admission charges. [9] [10]
Five senior staff members at the council were made redundant in late 2009. The cause was cited as a cost-cutting exercise, but press reports claimed that the 2008 Airbourne finances led to the firings. [11] At the time, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council David Tutt, said: "We will be investigating what went right, what went wrong and looking very seriously at ways of ensuring the event for future years." [12]
As with airshows around the world, the event carries high risks to human life, primarily to performing stunt pilots.
Exceptional risks to bystanders from crashed planes are minimised in the design of Airbourne, in part through the performance of stunts over the English Channel, rather than over populated land.
Nonetheless, despite all normal safety precautions, on Friday 18 August 2000 former Red Arrows pilot Ted Girdler crashed into the Channel and died, while performing a stunt for Airbourne crowds. He was 62 years old and lived in the neighbouring county of Kent. [13]
Girdler was killed when his Aero L-29 Delfín jet failed to pull up from a diving roll and fell into the sea, watched by a crowd of more than 40,000 people. The main body of the plane was not immediately found and members of the crowd were reported to be traumatised by witnessing the death. [14] [15]
Eyewitness reports in the national press described pandemonium: "Everyone was screaming and shouting. It is incredible that nobody [else] was hurt as there were thousands of people on the seafront. It only just missed a small group of boats. The plane just disappeared and left some debris floating on the surface of the sea." [13] Two swimmers, watching the event from the sea, were treated in hospital after swallowing jet fuel.
Jim Maitland, display co-ordinator for the event, said the diving aileron roll that Mr Girdler was attempting was not a dangerous manoeuvre. [13] Girdler had previously run a flying school at Manston Airport, with his family. [16]
In 2015, a disastrous accident occurred at Shoreham Airshow, taking place at Shoreham Airport, 20 miles from Eastbourne. 11 people were killed in what became known as the 2015 Shoreham Airshow crash.
Pilot Andy Hill crashed onto a major road, between Eastbourne and Brighton, following a failed attempt at a loop manoeuvre. Hill had performed the same manoeuvre at Eastbourne's Airbourne the week before. A large number of the smaller planes taking part in Airbourne continue to use Shoreham Airport, as a base to perform over Eastbourne. [17]
Following the Shoreham Disaster, the Civil Aviation Authority opened an investigation and later published a review. In response, on behalf of Airbourne, Eastbourne Borough Council issued a public statement saying: "we are confident of being able to introduce any additional safety measures required by the review." [18]
An air show is a public event where aircraft are exhibited. They often include aerobatics demonstrations, without they are called "static air shows" with aircraft parked on the ground.
Aerobatics is the practice of flying maneuvers involving aircraft attitudes that are not used in conventional passenger-carrying flights. The term is a portmanteau of "aeroplane" and "acrobatics". Aerobatics are performed in aeroplanes and gliders for training, recreation, entertainment, and sport. Additionally, some helicopters, such as the MBB Bo 105, are capable of limited aerobatic manoeuvres. An example of a fully aerobatic helicopter, capable of performing loops and rolls, is the Westland Lynx.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport, commonly referred to as Prestwick Airport, is an international airport serving the west of Scotland, situated one nautical mile northeast of the town of Prestwick Scotland, and 32 miles southwest of Glasgow, Scotland. It is the less busy of the two airports serving the western part of Scotland's Central Belt, after Glasgow Airport in Renfrewshire, within the Greater Glasgow conurbation. The airport serves the urban cluster surrounding Ayr, including Kilmarnock, Irvine, Ardrossan, Troon, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, and Prestwick itself.
The Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) is an annual air show in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The show is an aeronautical display of military, government and civilian aircraft, primarily from Canada and the United States. The show takes place along Toronto's waterfront for three days during the Canadian Labour Day weekend. The show began in 1946 and has been held at Exhibition Place since 1949.

The Oregon International Air Show - formerly the "Portland Rose Festival Air Show" - is an annual event held in Oregon, United States. The event began in 1988, and has an average annual attendance of 55,000. Profits from the show are distributed to local charities.
The Sunderland International Airshow was the biggest free annual airshow in Europe, held at the Roker and Seaburn seafronts. It took place over the course of three days, usually the final weekend in July, and attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators every year. The airshow features a large number of planes, including the Red Arrows and the Eurofighter Typhoon. In addition to the planes, the seafront plays host to a range of food counters, stalls and fairground games. The Royal Navy traditionally have a warship off the coast every year, usually HMS Ocean, the adopted warship of Sunderland, however in 2007, HMS Albion made an appearance instead as HMS Ocean had other commitments. The airshow was first held in 1989 as a single day show, and was planned to be a one-off event, when it attracted 250,000 spectators. Due to its success, from 1991 it became a two-day show, and subsequently three days. Due to thick fog and mist in 2008 the airshow was cancelled. The display was also postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 6 September 1952, a prototype de Havilland DH.110 jet fighter crashed during an aerial display at the Farnborough Airshow in Hampshire, England. The jet disintegrated mid-air during an aerobatic manoeuvre, causing the death of pilot John Derry and onboard flight test observer Anthony Richards. Debris from the aircraft fell onto a crowd of spectators, killing 29 people and injuring 60.
Shoreham Airshow took place annually in the late summer at Brighton City Airport, on the south coast of England. It was organised by volunteers from the local branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), and held in aid of the RAFA Wings Appeal.
Sean Doherty Tucker is an American world champion aerobatic aviator. He was previously sponsored by the Oracle Corporation for many years, performing in air shows worldwide as "Team Oracle". Tucker has won numerous air show championship competitions throughout his career, was named one of the 25 "Living Legends of Flight" by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in 2003, and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2008. He has led several efforts to assist youth in learning to fly or becoming involved in general aviation, and currently serves as co-chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)'s Young Eagles program, a role he has held since 2013.

The Black Knights is the official aerobatics team of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) featuring six F-16Cs Fighting Falcon in formation flight. The Black Knights' emblem is sported on the red vertical tail of each of the team's aircraft and the team's name is emblazoned on both sides of the aircraft which are painted in red and white—the national colours of Singapore.
Avro VulcanXH558Spirit of Great Britain was the last remaining airworthy example of the 134 Avro Vulcan jet-powered delta winged strategic nuclear bomber aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. It was the last Vulcan in military service, and the last to fly at all after 1986. It last flew on 28 October 2015.
Julie E. Clark is a retired American aerobatic air show aviator and commercial airline pilot. She started her commercial flying career with Golden West Airlines as a first officer and ended it in 2003 as a Northwest Airlines Airbus A320 Captain. She was one of the first female pilots to work for a major airline, and has been voted as "Performer of the Year" several times over the years for her air show performances.
AeroSuperBatics Limited, legally known as Aero-Super-Batics Limited, and commonly known merely as AeroSuperBatics, is a British civilian biplane multi-aircraft formation aerobatics and wing walking team. They currently perform as The AeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers, and were branded as 'The Flying Circus' in 2018. They were previously branded Breitling 'Swiss Chronographs' in accordance with their sponsorship agreement with the Swiss watch manufacturer Breitling. Prior to that, branding included Guinot 'Institut Paris', Colt Cars, St.Ivel 'Utterly Butterly', Cadbury's 'Crunchie', and Yugo Cars, according to their commercial sponsors at the time. Their display options currently consist of either a solo aircraft, or a two-ship formation pair, or a three-ship display, and previously included a four-ship formation, and during the 2008 display season, a five-ship formation. They are the world's only formation wingwalking team.
The Blades were a British civilian aerobatic team based at the Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire. They had been described as "the world's only aerobatic airline" and were the only full-time civilian aerobatic team in the United Kingdom. The Blades were a subsidiary of 2Excel Aviation.
On 22 August 2015, a former military aircraft crashed onto a main road during an aerial display at the Shoreham Airshow at Shoreham Airport, England, killing 11 people and injuring 16 others. It was the deadliest air show accident in the United Kingdom since the 1952 Farnborough Airshow crash, which had killed 31 people.
