The Eastern Music Awards (EMA) [1] is an award scheme specially created to honor excellence in creative art by Hi5 Entertainment. It is organized annually with support from PATER The Presenters A7ssociation Eastern Region, Eastern MUSIGA and other stakeholders. The awards scheme see to put more focus [2] on music for industry players from the Eastern Region of Ghana. The awards night every year features artists from Various parts of the Eastern Region. The 4th Edition of the Eastern Music Awards took place on Saturday, 19 December 2020. [3]

Background

The Eastern Music Awards were launched in 2017, with the first event taking place in Koforidua on Saturday 8 October 2017. [4]

Trophy/plaque

The trophy/plaque presented to winners of the various categories has been modified and changed over the years. Currently, the trophy is made of an acrylic glass guitar with EMA on a wooden handle. [5]

Nomination process

Categories along with Definitions are out doored every year prior to Opening of Nomination. Artists, Managers, Record Labels and Stake Holders are educated on the categories before they file for nominations. Entries are received every year through the EMA official website (www.easternmusicawards.com). [6]

Eastern Music Award for Artist of the Year

Artist of the Year is the topmost award, given to the artist(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the general public as having the highest audience appeal and popularity. The artist(s) must have released a hit single/album during the year under review.

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. Key elements of dancehall music include its extensive use of Jamaican Patois rather than Jamaican standard English and a focus on the track instrumentals.

The Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1985 and originally called the Gramophone Awards, to recording artists for quality works in the reggae music genre. Honors in several categories are presented at the ceremony annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to "honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position".

There are many styles of traditional and modern music of Ghana, due to Ghana's worldwide geographic position on the African continent.

Hiplife is a Ghanaian musical style that fuses Ghanaian culture and hip hop. Recorded predominantly in the Ghanaian Akan language, hiplife is rapidly gaining popularity in the 2010s throughout West Africa and abroad, especially in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Germany.

Denning Edem Hotor is a Ghanaian recording artist and entertainer who performs under the name Edem. In 2015, he was awarded Best International Act-Africa at the Black Canadian Awards in Canada.

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He is known by his stage name Shatta Wale, formerly Bandana. His best-known singles are "Dancehall King", "My level" and "We taking over". He is also known for Already from Beyoncé's Black is King Album which featured Major Lazer. His song "Dancehall King" earned him the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor who appeared in the films Never Say Never, The trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives. Wale's 2004 recording "Moko Hoo" was nominated for a Ghana Music Award.

Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda(born 23 June 1992), better known by her stage name MzVee, is a Ghanaian singer, afropop, dancehall and R&B artiste. Her debut solo album features several hit singles including 'Borkor Borkor', 'Natural Girl' and 'Dancehall Queen'. MzVee was signed to the record label Lynx Entertainment and was the winner of the New Artiste of the Year award at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. She parted ways with Lynx Entertainment in the year 2019. She is currently a solo artist.

Grace Latoya Hamilton, professionally known as Spice, is a Jamaican dancehall recording artist, singer, songwriter, actress and businesswoman. Often cited as the "Queen of Dancehall", Spice is recognised as one of the most prominent dancehall artists in the world. She is known for her aggressive flow, musical versatility and outspoken lyrics. Spice first gained recognition after performing at the annual dancehall festival Sting in 2000. She released her first single "Complain" for record producer Dave Kelly's Madhouse Records in 2003. She continued release singles "Right There" and "Hype", even being featured on songs with Jimmy Cliff and Beenie Man in 2004 and 2006 respectively.

The 2016 Ghana Music Awards was the 17th edition of the Ghana Music Awards which was held on May 7, 2016, at the Accra International Conference Center in Accra, Ghana and was hosted by Chris Attoh, DJ Black and Naa Ashorkor. E.L was the biggest winner at the event, taking home a total of five awards including the coveted 'Artiste of the Year' with Sarkodie and Bisa Kdei won four awards each. These musicians, alongside Stonebwoy, Efya, R2Bees, Wizkid, Joe Mettle and Adomaa, performed at the event.

Michelle Downer, commonly known as D'Angel, is a Jamaican reggae singer, actress, model, and brand ambassador. She has also given motivational speeches. In 2017, she released No Worries with Spice. The Gleaner calls her the First Lady of dancehall.

All Africa Music Awards is an annual awards event. The awards event was established by the International Committee AFRIMA, in collaboration with the African Union (AU) to reward and celebrate musical works, talents and creativity around the African continent while promoting the African cultural heritage. Its pioneer Awards show was held in 2014.

Terry Asare Boamah, known by the stage name Dada Hafco, is a Ghanaian high-life musician. His song Yebewu Nti was nominated in the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards as the Highlife Song of the Year. He was also nominated for the Highlife Artiste of the Year in the VGMA for two years in a row.

Isaac Akuffo, who goes by the stage name Koo Ntakra, is a hiplife and hip hop artist from Ghana who raps in his native language of Akuapem. He was signed to Bullhaus Entertainment in 2014 but currently on his own label KN Records. He won MTN Hitmaker in 2013 and was also nominated at Unsung Category in the Ghana Music Awards. He also won Rap Act of the year and Artist of the Year at Eastern Music Awards 2017. He was featured on Sarkodie's Trumpet collaboration in 2017.
